mold questions
« on: February 10, 2005, 04:08:44 AM »
I am just gearing up to start casting my own bullets.  Up to this point I have been using Cast Performance bullets in the 500 and 475 Linebaugh and 45 Colt.   I am going to order molds for those calibers from LBT; for someone just starting, would you recommend your 2 cavity or 4 cavity mold?

I also need to order a lubrisizer; would you recommend a Star or RCBS?  I plan to cast mostly gas-checked bullets

Thanks for your help.

LBT molds cast FAST.  With a 4 cavity I typically run 800 per hour if bullet weight is 300 gr or less, and precisely half that with a two cavity.  The larger bullets cast somewhat slower because of all the lead, and drain the lead pot a lot faster.  If you get 4 cavity molds you need a 20 # pot, and I highly reccomend that it be an RCBS, which will melt a full load in half the time as a Lee.  I have no experiance with other brands, but Saeco get high marks from customers.

By all means get a Star if you are just starting.  Push gas checked bullets nose first, and if you want to shoot plain base, order bevel base bullets and push them base first.  Both sizers are close in price, but the Star is a speed demon.
