30 Herrett barrel throat question
« on: February 10, 2005, 05:03:00 AM »
Last evening I began assembling some fireforming loads for my new 30 Herrett Contender barrel.  What I noticed is that the barrel has an extremely long throat.  So long that it isn't possible to seat a 130gr Hornady bullet even close to the lands.  The bullet wouldn't be in the case neck at all.  What type of throat length have you folks typically seen with 30 Herrett barrels?  The barrel is from TC.
Thanks

30 Herrett barrel throat question

I have seven factory TC barrels and this condition is prevalent in most of them.  My 30 Herrett barrel is much the same as yours.  If I drop a 130 gr bullet into the chamber and then measure to the back of the slug the measurement exceeds case length.  Other calibers I have will seat close to the lands only with heavy bullets if I want to keep one caliber of depth inside the case mouth.

I have read some information from [he who cannot be named] and others on the long throats of factory TC barrels.  This does not mean these barrels won't shoot well, it just means that if you get a barrel that needs playing with in order to shoot well, you have one less option to play with.

On threads which discuss rechambering a factory TC barrel, long throats or eccentric throats are many time sited as the deciding factor.  Hope this helps.

Thanks,  That helps alot.  I also have a 260 Rem and a 350 Rem Mag TC barrels and the 350 Rem Mag has a long throat but the 260 Rem doesn't.  I was concerned that there might be something wrong with the barrel as the throat was so long.   I've heard that Weatherby does this with their magnums as it allows for more powder with a bit lower pressure or at least a lower pressure spike.  Though I'm not sure if this is true.
Thanks Again
