I bought a thompson center black diamond inline and mounted a leupold 3to 9 scope ,Ialways cleaned my tradional muzzle loader in a pot of boiling water on the stove Ineed some advise so I dont ruin the scope ,I want to clean the barrel with hot soapy water Im shooting pyrodex pellets, I always heard if you clean a muzzle loader with solvents and put a light coat of oil down the barrel on a patch that it just increases the fouling . any advise would be appreiated. red

First off, what kind of powder are you using?  777 and BlackMag are easy since they clean up easily with patches soaked in warm water.  Just use 5-7 soaked patches, by then they should be coming out pretty clean.  Then use a couple dry ones.  Then let the barrel sit for 10 minutes to evaporate remaining moisture and lightly oil with a last patch.
Pyrodex is more difficult.  I still use the patch-only method, no soaking.  It just takes 2-3X as many patches.  I use Q-tips to get the nooks and crannies, the bolt and breech area, etc.
While it won't allow you to use a bucket of water, quick-release rings (I got mine from Leupold) allow easy scope removeal for cleaning and returns the scope to the point-of-aim when it goes back on.

Scott,

I clean as you do but in the sink in my shop.  I use a bore swab as it acts like a vacuum and pulls the hot soapy water up the barrel as I swab back and forth.

I do not clean any of my M/L with hot soapy water. I just run patches soaked in Windex with vinegar to clean the bore and use Q- tips to clean hard to get to places. I then wipe down gun with dry patches and rags and then wipe down with breakfree and patches with breakfree down the barrel.  :D   Pyrodex is not hard to clean up. I do the same with my Shiloh Sharps in 45-70, because I only shoot black powder cartridges.

I agree with "Redhawk" the windex clear from Wallyworld works just fine and I do not use the hot water method either. I clean my Omega and my 40-65 cartridge rifle the same. I have switched to mostly Black Mag'3 which makes the cleanup a lot easier and I am not as concerned about the corrosion as Black Mag tends to end up with a PH that neutralizes acid rather than forming it. It does corrode brass however so any traditional guys should be aware of that. My .25ACP brass after shooting is just dropped in water as soon as possible and the problem is handled.
