Customizing a Ruger 10/22

Have a question about customizing the Ruger 10/22.

  I have a factory 10/22.   I have been looking at the 2005 Cabela's Shooting catalog and want to put a Butler Creek Varmint Combo on it.

  My question is this...   I want to know if all I would have to do is switch out the receiver?   Or would there be other things required?  How difficult is it to change the barrel?

The barrel is held in the reciever by one screw that is under the action. After you remove the barreled action from the stock, you loosen that one screw and the barrel slides out. Slide the new one in and tighten the screw and you're done. You can modify the original stock if you wish, instead of buying a new one. Just use a 1" dowel rod or piece of pipe with some coarse sandpaper wrapped around itand enlarge the barrel channel in the wood stock.

From what I have read Butler Creek does not have that great of barrels. If you are going to do it get a Green Mountain barrel or some other good brand. PM Lawdog and ask him he has tricked out a few to his satisfaction with Green Mountain barrels. He may have some other good suggestions for you as well. Jim

They are easy to work on, and fun.  Don't think it will be inexpensive.  I really like the one I built, but I could have had a Cooper for what I have in it.  The barrel is the least expensive part.  And I agree with the other posters: start with at Green Mountain barrel.

Drop by ruger22.com and do some research. he has cheap parts and lots of good advice.

Definitely go with Green mountain barrels.  I have used them on 5 10/22’s, a 10/22M and two different 77/22’s.  Lawdog
