Home brewed lube for conicals?
« on: February 11, 2005, 07:48:26 AM »
A friend is determined to use conicals in his 50 cal. Renegade.I've been using 4:1 or 7:1 olive oil/beeswax for patch lube.
Would either work adequately[especially in summer]?,would they adhere without melting off/flaking off while being carried?
Thanks.

Sounds a little soft for bullets. Maybe replace the oil with animal fat or Crisco shortening. Look around this forum, there are lots of lube threads.

I seem to favor a 50/50 mix of beeswax and criso and :D  a tablespoon of olive oil on my REALS conicals :D

hans;  Why you say "a friend is determined to shoot conicals in his Renegade" .  I shoot them exclusively for hunting and they work great.  Very accurate and deadly.  My Renegade likes Buffalo Bullet 385gr HPHB over 80 gr of Swiss ff.  Fill the base hole with described lube and a felt wad over the powder.

I'm with roundball on the TC 1000 and also the lube attachemnt can be had in .50 and .54 cal too.   If you want something stiffer get the Wonder Lube in the plastic tub.  It's the same thing just harder.  You can put it in a shallow plastic container and melt it in the mircrowave and then put the conicals in upright with the melted lube at just the right level.  once hardened you can push em out just like any other pan lube operation.

I bought mine in a local shop.  You can probably call TC and order directly or get their little freebee handout catalog that most gun stores have and order from it.  The only run 4 or 5 bucks.
