Win Trapper - Magazine Tube End-Cap Screw
« on: February 07, 2003, 03:04:09 AM »
The screw itself is not the problem, but where it mounts into the barrel is.  The screw rounded out the recess milled into the barrel to the point that the magazine tube developed a little too much forward and aft slop.  I've peened the metal back and have a temporary fix.  Does anyone know of any long term options?

Castaway--  Try locktiting the magazine tube into the receiver..  This should take the force of retaining the loaded magazine against the recoil impluse and will still allow the weapon the be thoroughly cleaned...  I would try the 'blue' first but would use the 'red' if the situation continues..  It may also be possible to go to a larger retaining screw.  This should allow deepening the retension recess..  The locktite would be the easiest...  and would likely work..  from the gunnut69

I know this is an old post, but I had the problem fixed shortly afterwards.  I took the rifle to a smith and had him cut a dovetail in barrel, then drilled the slug so the endcap screw now sits in the harder slug.

That is indeed a good fix. I was just trying to do the least to change a very expensive antique. Your fix while it works great would significantly lower the rifles value and get me the smith in a heap-o-trouble,, if the rifle was a new model, it's great. After going back over some records I found I'd fixed one with a similar problem. I drilled and tapped a small hole in the barrel where the retension hole is, threaded in a screw and peened it in place. Then made the hole in it. Very little shows and the fix can be easily repeated should the problem come back. It shouldn't though as I case hardened the screw(plug?) before it's last installation.
