Bobcat Lure
« on: February 11, 2005, 11:57:13 AM »
I am starting to plan ahead for the next trapping season. I would like to make my own lure. Does anyone have or know of a good recipe? I cannot use bait only lure. :bye:

Lots of skunk or beaver castor. Either works well.

What do you mean you cannot use bait only lure?...what is the definition of bait vs lure?  Do you mean visable bait?

I cannot have any visible signs of any part of any animal including hair or body parts. My definition of lure would be juice from any bait. Bait being any piece of meat. Lure the way I am talking would start out as meat, paste, body parts, hair or anything else. The way I would use the lure would be to soak it in cotton ball or into a piece of wood. The spread it around my sets.

Simple but fairly effective liquid formulas could be a base of either bobcat urine or fish oil with a few pulverized cat glands, ground castor and a dash of skunk musk.  If you want to get more elaborate, generally the more ingredients a lure contains the more effective the lure gets and cats like musky smelling lures.  Tonquin musk, civet musk, musk ambrette and muskrat musk are good additions but don't use so much skunk musk in the formula that the excellent milder ingredients get overpowered and nullified. Catnip is good too and can be a real asset when used in the correct amount but don't overdo catnip as too much can actually repel cats. Don't forget to add a little sodium benzoate to preserve the lure and some glycerine to keep it from freezing. Good luck!  Ace :-)

or, you could just buy a bottle from ASA and save the headaches and trial/error of missed opportunities, plus benefit from his years of experience.
your first cat will more than pay for it.
