8x57 shooter?
« on: February 11, 2005, 06:44:27 PM »
What are my current options for picking up a decent 8x57 mil surp to plink on the range and occasionally hunt with?
I'm not spending Mitchells prices, all I want is something accurate enough to have fun with.
I've sportered several 98's and a turk 03, now I want one to keep as is. I have a K98 that won't shoot something even close to patterns so it's heading down the road to sporterville.
I have a mint Swede 38 that was a deal I couldn't pass up now I need a 8mm mauser.
Who's dealing the best for something with a good bore?
Thanks in advance.

Well the turks can be a crap shoot though I got a darn good one. I guess if I was going to buy a other 8mm I would go with a Yugo.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Get a 24/47 from one of the major distributors.These are all shiney bore good shooters.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

just got a 24/47 in last night from AIM. It looks to be new - except for being covered in cosmoline. I haven't had a chance to do any cleaning on it yet. I received a Turk mauser from SOG a couple of days ago. Its in what I would call very good condition, but the bore measures .329 so I am sure accuracy would suffer with jacketed rounds.

The 24/47 was around $150 with shipping. It came with bayonet, sling, and ammo pouches. You would have a hard time picking up a .22 from Wal-Mart at that price.

Now SOG lists the yugo 24 as small ring and the 03 as large ring.
I know for sporterizing large is better and supposedly stronger.

Is this an issue for what I'm looking for?

Additional question, what do you think of the yugo SKS they have?
Always wanted one to play with.

Thanks for the info so far.

I'm not a Mauser expert, but for plinking and occasional hunting like you stated the Yugo Mauser would fit the bill quite nicely.

I have one of the Yugo 59/66 SKS models. It also appears to be unissued, or at least handled very little. The gun is heavy even for an SKS. Its well made and another bargain.

Both are very nice looking guns. Get one of each, they will only go up in value. :grin:

You got me looking now too but i'm not sure if its going to be brand new(saiga .223) or another C&R I'm kind of swinging both ways and i hate decisions.  But i'm checking the rack of older rifles first.  It has to be a rare C&R.  I have seen some but i have no clue to what they are because i have never seen them before.  I'll go back soon to look again and get some markings off them.  One looked like a M1895 or Spanish 7mm carbine with that toed in front sight protector.  The other was a very short rifle but i'm not sure yet what it was.(odd)  So its off to pawn shops and gun shops.   Those used racks sure can have some great "CHEAP" finds too. I have to get at least one this year.                                                                                                                                                                      BigBill

tbmaker - I think you have at least 4 options:  A VZ/CZ24-47, or a VZ/CZ 24-52, a Yugo 48 or a Yugo 48A.  I have a VZ/CZ 24-52 and a Yugo 48A.  Neither cost more than $149 at gunshows.  They are both great rifles, the Yugo is a bit lighter and feels a bit handier (and is brand spakin' new, too).  The Yugo groups under 2" at 100 yds with open sights, and is gonna get scoped but left in mil-spec condition.  Haven't played with the heavier 24-52, but am thinking about doing something with it - just haven't figured it out yet.  Mikey.

The guns I have bought from AIM come in for real gun boxes and well packed. The first Yugo I got from them had a problem and I had to send it back. It took about 3 weeks from the time I sent it back until the replacement came - The ATF was doing one of their periodic audits and had their receiving books so AIM couldn't open up the gun I returned. SOG and AIM have been good to me so far.

Here's all the dealers and wholesalers I've dealt with so far and their ratings;

For Guns;
Century Arms International..........Excellent............................................
Samco Global Arms.....................Very Good+.......................................
SOG "southern ohio gun"..............Excellent...........................................
Allens Armory.............................Excellent...........................................
Aim Surplus................................Excellent  (Eric's specials are awesome never pass up a darkbore special I recieved a unissued gun)

I've heard that Empire Arms is another awesome dealer too but i never bought off him yet but i'm sure in the future i will.  His prices maybe a little high but his guns are under rated so you'll be very happy with what you get.  I have never heard anyone complian about Empire Arms.  I have only heard good things about Dennis plus he is willing to give his opinion on some of the other forums too on anything that envolves guns. If i was going to get a swede sniper it would only be from him, i trust no one else with my $1,200 for the only reason I'm sure i'd get what i'd paid for if he has any swede's left.  From what i heard from samco's there past the bottom of the barrel on snipers.

Now for deals on new and surplus ammo;

Aim Surplus
SOG
Outdoormarksman
the armory
ammuntionstore
sportsmans guide

Aim surplus, SOG, allens armory and Samco has some mausers right now but you may want to look at Kiesler's Wholesale  they have an unissued M48 yugo for $189.00 in the Shotgun (Blues) News.   If you want a shooter and a looker too. The Blues is what i get everytime i look thru it!!!!!  The wants surpass the needs.

I cleaned up the AIM Mauser today. I cleaned the bore with the electronic cleaner and when draining it there was no blue (copper) It took about 3 patches through the bore with solvent and it was clean. When I used the electronic cleaner on the Turk the solution came out bright blue and I have been swabbing the bore for a few days and its just now starting to come clean. The bore on the Turk is looking good, but it is way oversize for an 8mm Mauser.

MGMorden,

What's the deal at Sarco?  I didn't see anything on their website so I called but they were already closed.  Is this the same rifle/condition AIM has at 139.95?
