454 or 480?
« on: February 12, 2005, 04:25:30 AM »
I am considering a big bore encore barrel.  I am undecided between the 480 Ruger and the 454 Casuall.  Anyone have either?  how do they shoot and whats the recoil like?  The advantage of the 454 is that I have 45 colt dies and wouldn't have to buy new dies.  I like the idea of the bigger bullets in the 480 though.  Let me know what you think.  I may do some hunting with it but mainly just want a new toy.

I would have to go with the 454 Casull. You can down load it to shoot like a 480 and then go back to the 454 power when you want. Better bullet selection for the 454 casull.  Recoil on either will be stout. Good luck in your decision.  :D

You can NEVER make a .454 shoot like a .480. But the reverse can be done. Actually the .480 factory loads with 325 grain bullet are almost as fast as the 300 grain .454 factory ammo anyway. In an Encore where you can load them out a bit for more case capacity you can easily exceed .454 Casull 300 grain velocity with 325s.

But you'll never put 420-460 grain bullets in that .454 Casull.

I consider the .480 far more versatile than the .454. I had both. I now have only the .480.
