.223 seating depth question

hi all
a relative has a savage 110 in .223 with 24 in bull barrel
when we measured the oal with a stoney point oal guage and a 50 gr vmax it measured 2.449  way too far out to start for seating depth

sooo    where do you start when you cant reach the lands?
how would you determine a good seating depth for a rifle with that much freebore?

Try the recomended length in the manual for that bullet. If they don't show one I go one caliber in depth. ie .224 into the neck for starters. Many are seated to the base of the neck also and reaching the lands isn't always nessesary.

When I load my .223 NEF with 55gr Hornaday SP's (which is a short bullet)    I set the oal for 2.300. This give me about .164 in the case.  This load is very accurate in my .223 Handi. It  works for me.
