A handi offered in 30/40 Krag.

If there is anyone who has experience with this particular cartridge, please elaborate on its performance.

 The 30/30 has a proven reputation and a big following, for good reasons. The 30/40 is stronger. And might handle heavy 200 and 220 gr bullets better.
 It was my first rifle in a sporterized Krag, so I'm partial to it. I shot factory ammo and my friend reloaded 150 gr. lead for me. I scared the heck out of a lot of groundhogs with them lead boolits. Interesting to remember that many people claimed mine was the loudest gun they ever heard.  
 Perhaps a 30/30 Handi can be reamed to 30/40, but I'm not sure about what would need done to the extractor. Would this be a good idea? After all, 308 and 30/06 are available. Why go to something less, and spend more to do it? H-mmm, less?... why indeed?
 I heard somewhere that the late Harry Pope used a 30/40 in a Hiwall for his deerhunting.
 If I had a 30/40 Handi next to my 45/70 Handi the day before deer season, I'd be an absolute basket case!

We don't classify the .30-40 Krag as a small bore cartridge today, but when the U.S. Government dropped the .45-70in 1892 and adopted the .30-40 it is easy to see why "it" was once considered a small caliber. As is usually the case with U.S. Military cartridges, the .30-40 enjoyed a great deal of popularity as a big game cartridge long after it had been replaced with the .30-03 in 1903. And for good reason; ballistically, the .30-40 Krag and later the .300 Savage are practically identical. Of course, the availability of war surplus Krag-Jorgensen rifles to civilian shooters for $1.50 didn't hurt the .30-40's popularity either. One seldom sees a big game hunter toting a .30-40 Krag in the woods these days but that has nothing to do with its performance. Even today the old cartridge will hold its own with a number of modern day wonders and even is superior to some. A 150 grain bullet at 2500 fps is strong deer medicine and a 180 grain bullet at about 2300 fps would be fine for elk and moose out to  150 yards or so. A number of propellants work fine in the .30-40 Krag with H414, H380, H4895, IMR-4320, and W-760leading the pack.

 Hey Montanan, please advise, Reaming to 30/40 doesn't sound like a bad idea or difficult project. Is it? Is a 30/30 barrel the proper place to start? Are mods. to the extractor necessary?             Woodbutcher

Thanks fellows. But I'm afraid this is just wishful thinking on my part.

NEF will never produce a firearm for an obscure cartridge that is no longer manufactured. If they did, they would not only be encouraging the practice of handloading, they would be endorsing it. And this they will never do for litigious reasons.

Factory ammo is still loaded for the Krag by both Remington and Winchester. I would buy one in a minute. It is a great cast bullet cartridge, though I would only shoot factory loads if NEF is listening in !!!!

While you're probably right, it is such a crock. I wonder how many 30 Herret and 357 Herret barrels for Contenders are out there? How about 300 Whispers. How abot 357 Maximum Handis????I wonder how many handloaders are criminals? I think they ought ot stop producing factory ammo. Then to shoot, you would have to reload your own. How many criminal types would use a gun then? Perhaps we'd get lucky and the majority would blow their hands off  :eek:  :grin:  :grin:  :grin: The second and most important reason this is a crock is that it would be far easier for a maker to prove what it would take to blow up their gun than it would to prove your load was safe. And thus far easier to prove that if your load blew the gun, it was out of spec. Too Bad. What a bunch of BS. This nation has been lawyerized. I saw a commercial Friday night, a company offering to loan you money on your lawsuit that has not been won yet..... Personal responsibility is a concept that seems to be lost in these days and times. I'm a dinosaur.

the 30/40 krag is very doable i had one.. a friend of mine still does......ream a 30 30  to 30/40 krag...ITS EASY.....THINK ABOUT THIS ......how many post are here saying sticking cases,,,,all are rimless....i have had a few also....NEVER AGAIN....30/40  CAN BE LOADED almost as fast as a 06....and no sticking cases,,,,,i sold mine before i got my crony but it was a good round in the h&r before they started making the STRONGER ACTIONS.....JB... I HAVE HAD 17 REM. A243,FACTORY A 3006 AND A762/39 ALL HAD STICKING CASE PROBLEM AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER usally right after you shoot that big buck....its a pain in the a// trying to get a ramrod  down the barrel while hoping the dear dont get up and run.....jb

I am grateful that I have never experienced the seemingly common problem encountered with rimless cases failing to extract. My .243 has always extracted, and ejected cases flawlessly. But, I did consider this problem when I thought about the 30/40 Krag being well-suited for single shot firearms due to its rimmed case.

I concur with your "rant." I'm not ashamed to admit if I didn't enjoy my time developing handloads that deliver superior downrange performance compared to factory ammo, I would still be shooting rimfire ammo due to the prohibitive expense of most centerfire calibers.

Oh, by the way, please don't be too hard on lawyers. The only real problem lawyers have is that 99% of them give the rest a bad name.  :lol:
