Savage Chokes
« on: February 13, 2005, 09:48:14 AM »
I have a Savage .22 Hornet/12 Gauge Turkey Gun. I have this gun about 15 years.   I unscrewed the choke today to see what choke came with the gun.  I don't see any printing anywhere on the choke that would let me know what choke it is.  All I see is 2 small grooves cut into the crown of the choke.   These grooves are seperate from the notches cut for the choke wrench.  I was wondering if Savage uses some kind of code instead of lettering.

sounds like you have a modified. if full choke was one notch, then mod would be two. and even if the scale was reversed and full was three notches, mod would still be two.

make sense? if there's three chokes they use a 3 notch system...F, M, IC.

Thats the way i understood it.

You could always pattern it and see what choke youve got that way.

I went to the Savage website and looked around.  On the page where they feature the Owner Manual the website says Savage notches the top of the chokes so you can tell which one you have without removing it.

No notches - Full

Two Notches - Modified

Three notches - Improved Cylinder

I mostly use a Mossberg for Turkey hunting, so out of curiosity I got the extra Chokes out that I already have for the Mossberg.  They fit in the Savage.  They aren't notched on the top like the Savage is but at least they fit.
