all around barrel
« on: February 13, 2005, 04:34:09 PM »
I just bought a new encore frame for $150.  I have no idea what I have gotten myself into.  There are just too many barrels to choose from.  I need a barrel to get me started.  I want something to use on coyotes and deer, 100 yards range max, and be able to buy factory loads.  Anyone have a suggestion on what caliber and where I can get one in Colorado.

I would think the 7mm08 would be just about perfect, and even better than 100yrds if you wanted.  Or even a straight walled pistol round would be fine like a 44 mag for the range you listed. plenty of factory ammo for either one. I take it you don't plan to scope it if your keeping your range under 100yrds?

7-08 for Yote's
Are you just looking for a puff of fur and then just vapor :P
Bad JU-JU for being pelt freindly.
My vote would be for the .243, good deer cartridge and the max for Yote's if you want it fur freindly as you can down load it with 58gr. V-max.

I would also get the .243 for what you intend on using it for. By the way great price you paid for the frame.  :D

If you are more interested in hunting deer, I would say the .308 Winchester.  I am sure the 7-08 is just fine...and is a little flatter shooting.  However..I have always been 'old school' for deer...larger caliber/heavy bulllets for whompability w/ less meat damage.  I would prefer a .308 180 gr bullet @ 2500 fps over a 7mm 150 gr bullet at 2700 fps.  But my main reason would be the availability of cheap milsurp ammo.  Any 7mm-08 ammo that you find is going to be premium priced specialty ammo or you wil have to re-load for it.  I re-load for about everything that I shoot, however, it is wonderful to be able to buy cases of ammo for plinking, or to have for an emergency stash.
....make it count

Thanks for the info.  Maybe I'll look a little closer at the 270 or 243.  What barrel length should I look for?
