What Is it About Hounds.......
« on: February 14, 2005, 01:54:27 PM »
Before I went into the service, many years ago, I used to run a hound pack.  Since then I always kept a hound just because.  Last night I stopped by the sporting goods store and a guy was there selling Black & Tan pups(8 weeks old, with all papers).  I knew better than to go over and look at them but I did anyway.  Now instead of one Bluetick at home alone he has two little buddies to keep him(and me) company.  The wife took one look at them when I got home and said, "What is it about hounds.....", then walked off and got them a bowl of milk.  Guess it's time to teach the kids and grandkids about running hounds.  I'm too old to run after them anymore.  My question is, Does one ever outgrow hounds?  Lawdog

In a word; NO. You never out grow hounds, and I'm not sure you would ever want toout grow them.

Boy did DG hit it right. I don't do hound's, Pointer's and some retriever's for me. But I have some friend's that have had them all there lives and would do without a wife and kid's befor their hound's. Another interesting thing, that you now fit. I've never known a real dog man that owned just one, at least not for long. At one time I had 18 pointer's and shorthair's plus an assortment of other's I was training for someone else.

There's a true story about a friend of mine's dad. Logan was into hound's and carried them everywhere in the trunk of his car. When asked what he'd do if he owned a caddie, he said he'd have to put them in the trunk also. His wife at one time objected to all his hound's, said he needed to get rid of a few. Logan told her that she had been a good wife and a great mother to his kid's. Then he told her he was sure gonna miss her. That's a true story!

Once you have the opportunity to hunt with and listen to a good open mouth hound push a track it gets in your blood. My dad started me out as a kid with Beagles on rabbits and hare. I got into Coonhounds a little later and still hunt them to this day. I will never be without one, there is nothing like being in the field and hunting with good dogs.

bobg,
Take heart my friend. I used to know a guy in Bend, Ore that was, is, a hound fenatic. Some year's ago he was in an accident that parilized him from the waist down. It was devastating for him, not because he couldn't work anymore, but because he couldn't run his cat hound's. Today he's back at work supervising his company but more importantly he's back to running his hound's. It's more limited than what he's used to but he's doing it; he had a fourwheeler put together he could strap himself into. He has someone go with him to get out his wheelchair when they're loafing or telling story's, not that hound men would do that, and unload his fourwheeler when HIS dog's strike. DON'T GIVE UP!

Lawdog,

Yes you can outgrow having a hound around. What you CANNOT outgrow is hound PUPPIES. My wife won't let me near beagle or hound pups anymore. If ya pick one up and it'll kinda nose at ya. Then ya look into them soulful eyes framed by a pair of ears that're too big for its head and it wags it's tail and kinda says"Wanna take me home?" I've watched boys a lot harder and bigger than me just melt over em.

I'm owned by a 10 year old Peke,2 Four year old beagles and a 7month old Rott. Notice the spans in between the ages? Funny how ya tend to forget chewing, peeing all over the place and the other things that go along with puppies!

Lawdog,

I almost wish you wouldent have posted your hound dog story as i sit here reading this i have tears in my eyes, If you remember some time iin past i told you about my main hounds getting poisoned and have never had the heart to hunt behind hounds again. Well now i have gotten too old to hit the hills and wished i would have got some more dogs and kept it up.
My hounds not only made me money but they were my best friends. The sad thing is you can't go back to where you were. To answer your question
NO, YOU NEVER OUT GROW YOUR HOUNDS THEY BECOME PART OF THE FAMILY, Hope you have a great time playing with your pups. Regards.......Joe.......

Lawdog,

At 15 and having only broken into the sport of hounding, I can produly say I plan to own and do the best I possibly can for hounds I own, and use them to the best of their ability. Coming into my 4th year, I find myself hooked and know what my passion later in life will be, to earn enough money working after college to a point where I can open what will hopefully be a successful guide service, and have the thrill of taking people out hunting behind a pack of hounds that are dedicated to what they do.

I hope to carry on the tradition, like my father has done for me, although his father didn't do it to any extent that I know of. I promise to make sure my future children will carry on what will hopefully be a family tradition, and until the day I meet my maker, my kids (hopefully grandkids as well) will always have the rights to the pack of hounds I shall hopefully acquire and leave to them in my will.

I owe my passion to about four or five people, they know who they are, and if they saw this post would know it immediately. I have been truely blessed in knowing them in my short life on Earth.

I don't know if you call me a hound man or not but I've had a Beagle or two for the last 40+ years. They make great house pets & BOY! DO THEY LOVE TO HUNT. :)  :)   I grew up (upstate New York) chasing them & have never stopped. After retiring from the Army in 1990 I've hunted rabbits and pheasants behind my dogs. If I had a dollar for every guy that laughed at me for hunting pheasants with beagles I could buy a new truck; pay cash, & have money left over! (Funny they aren't laughing when they come back & they were skunked or only have one bird & I've limited out.)

I'LL ALWAYS HAVE A BEAGLE OR TWO!

It gets into your blood, the hounds.  Nothing like a good race. The woods, the opening strike, the race.  It doesnt go away...
