Speer 100 grain plinker for the 300 whisper

I bought a box of these bullets and have not had any luck at all getting anthing better then a shotgum pattern at 50 yards.  Has anyone had any luck with them?  It is the only bullet I have tired that wouldnot shoot into an inch at 50 yards, most are half that.  thanks!

Brian, those slugs are fragile and MAY be coming apart from the spin of your barrel. A long time ago I loaded some in 30-06 cases for grins. When they connected with a ground hog out to about 100 yards,it looked like a can of tomato juice was hit. Pieces were scattered for several feet.

Brian---I've thought about trying the Speer 100 gr plinkers in my 300 Whisper---but have not yet done so. I have tried them in my 30-30 Marlin and found that they will shed their jackets at high velocities. I had to slow them down to around 1200 fps and then my load density was very poor. I thought about going to Unique instead of Varget but have not tried that powder yet. I wonder if Unique or 231 or even Bullseye would work in the 300 Whisper? Sure would be a fun ----- a " big " 22lr!!!!  :-D  pg

Rocky Raab has published an article on using the Speer Plinkers in light loads (with Unique). I've loaded and fired about 50 rounds in my 30-30 (21" Contender) with very satisfactory results. Have loaded, but not tested, some 30-06 versions. Here's the link to this article:

I have shot the plinker 1800 or so out of my 30 carbine barrel, 16.0/H110/SR mag primer if I remember correctly and they shot well under 1" at 50 yards. I have shot the Hornady short jacket out of my whisper with H110 but at starting or lower load , seemed like 17 or so and they shot OK. They will make pressure sooner than the 110 jacket bullets in my barrel, exposed lead up front I guess. The plinkers shot just fine out of my 30/30 14" with 10. of unique under them. The Sierra 50th anniversary  pistol manual gives some fast powder loads (AA#5,7 and Blue dot) for the Whisper . BE CAREFUL ruined some of the cases trying a fire form load with the Hdy SJ 100. My old octgon 30 carbine barrel --1:14 twist I think shot the plinkers at 1850 and shot them well . I think the bullet will take more than 200 fps but it is a little finicky about loads.
I bought 500 of the remington 110 rnsp to play with out of the whisper , have any of you tried that combo?

Brian try H110 with your 30/221. I went and tried some of the Remington RNSP110 that Midway has on sale routinely for 5-7$ per 100 and also tried some Hdy 110 V-max bullets and both shot well with a 19.5 H110 and CCI small rifle mag primer. started at 18.0 H110 and worked up to 19.5 and only got .001 cae head expansion form unfired cases at 19.5 load. In the past I have had  case head expansion of .003-.004 on too hot loads and ruined the cases by enlarging the primer pockets where a primer would not seat tightly.  So in my barrel these loads apperar to be at a safe pressure level.  The 110 V-max shot very well with the 19.5 load grouped .25" at 50 yards. The 110 RN grouped about .75" at 50 yards , not great but adequate for varmits and such.
