Howdy all. It was kind of quite, so I figured that I would post. I have been out many times for caribou this year, most recently on Sunday last (I actually try to make it out every weekend). Have seen hundreds of animals this year. This past Sunday, we found a herd of 12, and my friend took one. We started dressing it and the herd walked over to the bush about 500 yards south of us. Soon enough from out of that bush walked 79 caribou, and basically surrounded us. It was strange how they figured that the hunt was over and weren't scared of us. Once the animal was dressed and quartered we just sat there in the sun watching them hang-out around us for about an hour. They had absolutely no fear. Some idiots came by on skidoos and started stunting on the lake, circling the caribou with their sleds and working them into a gallop. Wrecked the moment. The idiots left, and we decided to load-up and move on. I gotta report these guys to the DNR... you figure?
Looking forward to seeing much more caribou in the next few months. Now the hunt is on for a wolf. I am going to try calling with a calf distress call to see if they respond. I don't know how hungry they are though. Lots of gutpiles left from the hunt. There was a party of local Dene about 5 miles down the lake that took 31 animals that morning. They do not waste any, though, and that should feed their families for the year.
