bullet seating with different length bullets

I reloaded a batch of bullets(125 barne-x)for my 30-06. I had the bullet seated about right, accuracy was great. Now I want to load some sierra 110hp. If I go with the same oal. it will only be seated about a small 1/4". Forgive my crude measurements. Alot of you talk in thousandths and hundredths, I dont have a caliper. But regaurdless,I'm nowhere near the neck/shoulder line. Do I need to seat deeper, and let it be what it'll be. Shoot it and see how it behaves? To get it closer to the lands it's not going to be seated very far. Does it need to be?? Thanks

My general rule is to seat the bullet at least a caliber into the neck.  If your chamber is long, you're going to get further away from the lands when you go to a shorter bullet.  

Don't get too hung up on getting within a few thousands from the lands.  Some rifles actually shoot better loaded a little further from the lands.  

I'd advise you to pick up a pair of calipers.  They're not that expensive, but they are invaluable to the reloader.  Once you have a pair, you'll wonder how you got along without them before.

Wlscott is right, buy a decent caliper. A good caliper will serve you the rest of your life if you take care of it and don’t drop in on the concrete floor. Without them you’re groping around in the dark.

One more tip in caliper selection would be if you are not comfortable with the decimal system I would suggest getting a digital read-out model, it is very easy and quick!  They are not over priced either.

Just bought some Digital Calipers from Harbor freight Tools, seems they are the same ones as the Lymans, RCBS and the rest just with a different sitcker on the scale.

$15.99 vs. >$40+.  :wink:

Whoa. Seating too deep can affect pressure. Use those calipers and check length against published specs. Seating deeper and letting be what it be may generate some unexpected pressures (i.e. too high). Seating too far out, ditto.

I absolutely cannot deal with the volume of e-mail I'm getting purely as a result of members who will not take the time to maintain a valid e-mail address on file or who have a blocking program for the e-mail they ask for. We send no e-mail to any member unless they ask for it. Folks who ask for e-mail and they bounce it back to me personally are causing me more headaches than I'm willing to accept. IT IS GONNA STOP one way or another.
