New 22Mag Sporster bbl Arrived - Questions
« on: February 15, 2005, 03:43:18 AM »
Hey guys,

I got my Sporster Frame back today with the new 22Mag Bull bbl. :-D  6 weeks door to door.

It came with a scratched bbl and a new scratch in my frame at no extra cost...what a deal   I'll clean these up myself as best I can as I don't want to do the process again and chance more damage. Its a woods rifle anyway so I'd of done the damage myself eventually.

Ok, now that I got that out of my system, I have a couple of questions.

My original purchase was with the 17HMR Bull bbl. On the 17 bbl it is stamped 'Sportster' 17 HMR. The new 22Mag Bull bbl is stamped 'SS1 Ultra Mag' 22 Win Mag. Sound normal?

It is also a tappered Bull bbl...the 17 is not a tappered Bull bbl.

It could be me, but it seems the forend is pretty tight at the sides...I don't remember it that way with the 17, but its been a while. I'll shoot both barrels before I start to mess with it.

All-in-all I'm glad to have it back. It's going to be in the 50s this week so if the mud isn't knee deep at the range I may try to get out to shoot it. I bought a box of the Remington 33gr Vmax to start with.

I keep hearing QTD's email voice in my head saying "for $35 more dollars you could get a whole new rifle". And, I would have avoided these questions...Live & learn.

As always, your input would be appreciated.

Too bad about the scratches.  Much as I hate scratching them myself, I hate it more when someone else does it.

The markings and barrel contours sound like my barrels.  I have a Sportster .17hmr and a .22wmr Ultra.  The Sportster would have been shipped on an NEF stamped receiver and the Ultra on an H&R marked receiver.  The difference is mostly cosmetic.

H&R uses the terms heavy barrel and bull barrel for them.  The bull has almost no taper and the heavy has some.
My prayers are always answered,  sometimes the answer is no...........

So the Ultra bbl fits both the Sportster & the Ultra Rifle?

I must admit, I like the contour on the 22 WMR as I'll be carrying it around the woods. When I do that with the full bull 17HMR, it gets a bit heavy.

Hope the 22WMR shoots as well as my 17HMR

Wow, thanks for posting this experience.  I've been tossing around whether to send my frame in for another barrel or just buy another rifle.  Think I'll buy another rifle. :D

Let us know how she shoots!
