For some reason 86 Winchesters are in my blood, there so cool! This past week, another great 86 moved into my gun locker. That makes six great rifles standing tall (all with 26 inch octagon barrels) in a row along with one 24in round barrrel and one, 26in round barrel. This latest rifle, a 45-70 round barrel with full mag tube and correct sling swivels had at one time, a receiver site on the left side. Sure would like to find another for it. I understand the lyman number 56-A was the best choice along with the Redfield 70-F...Any of you guys had experiences with original 86's and the several choices of receiver sights?

:) I'm also a fan of the '86. I own several in different calibers. My main interest is in late series guns, those made after 1915.Only two of these have receiver sights. One has a Lyman 21, the other a Lyman 56.One of the last series guns, a .33WCF, has a Winchester bolt peep.My earliest gun is an 1890 vintage 38-56, 26" oct bbl, silver blade front sight, standard elevator rear. To my knowledge, no '86s were factory drilled for receiver mounted peep sights prior to the late 1920s.
