Handi Rifle .45/70 Ammo

About a week ago i posted about  how  i spoke with Marlin Customer service last year about ammunition brands to use in there rifles . They told me only Rem ,Win.,and federal were to be used . With many more companies out there producing ammo now i called NEF today and spoke with there customer service rep. They told me we could use any ammunition maker as long as they loaded there ammo to saami specs.When i asked about Buffalo bores 45/70 magnum ammunition as they are loaded above saami specs, they told me that there ammunition was safe to use in the handi rifles and that the 45/70 handi rifle  strength is based on the same specs as the current marlin 1895 and winchester1886  therefore any ammunition made to be used in those two rifles are safe in the handi rifle. I thought i would just pass this information on to you guys who didn't know this. I myself was not to sure about it. Later Tanoose

Thats good to know I only use factory ammo :wink: and would never think of saving $ (or shooting more on the same dime) by reloading :-D  :-D  :-D

45/70s in old Wins?

Would hot 45/70s be a little much for the older weaker steel Winchester 1886s?  I would check that again......

If I had an old Winchester, I would stick to it's contempory loads.

I personally load my 45/70 Handi-Rifle to the Hodgdon published Ruger-Level 3 loads without any problems !

Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

This is your choice and I would recomend to anyone wanting to load up their 45-70 Handi's to this level...to approach it very cautiously...what may be supposedly safe in 1 forum members gun...may not be safe in anothers...

NEF has stated what they deem safe to use...if you choose to not abide by that...that is your choice...but it is not the recomendation of most members or staff here...

I hand load and I load to the lever gun specs in the manuals.  After shooting the 400gr loads from these manuals I would not want to shoot anything hotter.  Recoil is worse than my .338 Win Mag.

I agree with you completely...in my posting I completely forgot to add my standard caveat that what is safe in my rifle may not be in others, thus load up to this level VERY slowly & cautiously.
