Hey guys:

I just got back from my favorite gun shop...trying to find out about the new Weatherby SUB-MOA Vangaurds...for a new bolt gun purchase I'm planning to make this week...and I posted a rather lenghty explaination on the bolt rifle forum and ask for some help in caliber selection...here's the link to it..http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=55731

Anyway...I have the opourtunity to trade for a brand spanking new in the box CDL in 280...for a-lot less than what I would have to give up on the Vangaurd.....and need all you Remington fans advise to this rifle/caliber on my needs...long story short...I never have owned any of the higher grade Remington rifles...only a 788 in 7-08...but have owned their fine shotguns...high & low grades...and have always had good luck with them...and Remingtons Customer Service...they have some great people working there...but...the 280 CDL...can this rifle cover everything in the lower 48 ( NOT THE GREAT BEARS )...I really like the looks of the CDL's I held one in 243 todays...and it feels really great...not to mention it's really a great looking rifle.....so...tell me about it...should I accept the deal on it...it's ordered...but I don't have to take it if I don't want to...I don't think the 280's are offered anymore...and since it's a bolt gun...and a Remington...it shouldn't be to hard to make it better like going with the 280 AI on it if I want...or heck...even changing the barrels on it correct?

What do you guys think?

I doubt you'll need the AI but you're right it is a mighty fine round. So is the standard .280 Rem. Using the Hornady Light Mag ammo it will become the equivalent of the AI. Not sure if Federal makes one of their high energy versions of it or not. If so it too equals the AI and uses premium bullets.

Yes the .280 is plenty of gun for all but the big bears. Anything it won't do you should move to at least a .35 to handle.

The CDLs are nice guns. Mine is a .35 Whelen and I'd sure like another pound on it but if it was a .280 Rem. I'd consider the weight to be ideal. Buy it and if you don't like it let me know, maybe we can work out a deal.

I have not seen a CDL except on the 'puter. (I live back in the sticks) But they look like they have the "euro stocks" I used to special order for my BDL's. A kinda oil finished, understated look. I think they look great. And .280 is one of my favorite calibres. Bullet choice is exceeded only by the .308 family.
Remember, if you buy a Savage, that's what you end up with.

(you don't happen to still have that old junker of a 788 in 7-08 do you?)

Thats a good choice. Snap it up. I think they are a beautiful gun with nice features .

I have a model 700 Classic in 280 Rem. I would recommend the 280 Rem. to anyone that wants a good "all round hunting rifle". I wouldn't change it to a 280 AI, I'd keep it a 280 Rem. There are some good factory loads out there, but if you hand load the 280 Rem. is even better. You can load 120 gr. bullets all the way up to 175 gr. bullets.

Mac- funny but I think I jumped directly from your weatherby thread to this very one - spooky. Every year or so another cartridge seems to rise in popularity (at least from what I read) and lately I hear all about the 280. Until recently I heard little about this cartridge but now everyone seems to love them. Guess because they are less standard (so cooler) than a 270, shoot 7mm bullets (of which there are millions to choose from) and NOT a magnum of any sort. More than enough oomph for anything you referenced and still pleasurable to shoot. I am not sure how different it is from a 7x57 - just more American I suppose, a little more modern and quicker. It is a 270 with an ever so slightly fatter bullet. Just so you know, I am sure someone will tell me who, but the 7x57 was used to even kill elephants by somebody. I agree with Gray Beard - use Hornady ammo, Light Mag or regular and I bet you will love it. I think if you had bought the Weatherby the sheer beauty of the CDL would have haunted your decision. Set your mind at ease. Let us know how she shoots -congrats.

No worries....I won't be haunted by not buying it...I have the option to take it home while it remains in the store...but passed on it...it came in after I found the Weatherby...it's a real nice rifle..but...I wound up making a better trade and got a 270 and a 30-06 back in the trade...so I can't really complain about it....I did pre-order 1 of the new Remington Sparten rifles while I wa ther...my gun-dealer says the folks at the Big Green tell him sometime before summers out they will have them...he ordered 6 of them...and all are already sold...

I've not seen a CDL in 280 (at least not on Remington's site) except in the mountain rifle. I would like to find one for my dad for fathers day or Christmas. Who else chambers bolt guns in this round?

Sorry, I missed this thread. Congrats on the new rifle (even tho it ain't Remington :evil:

). I wish ya best of luck with it and that it takes a deer or two for ya this year.
