I'm one of those people who believe in getting every mile possible out of a vehicle I buy.  I bought a 1974 Dodge W100 4-WD PowerWagon new for $5,800 and still have it and use it.  It's a 360 V8 with 4-spd (close-ratio) transmission and manual lock-out hubs.  I am in the process of rebuilding the 360 cu in V8 now after putting 198,000 miles on it - the timing chain finally "stretched" enough to "jump timing" and it "ate all the valves up".  The total it will cost me to totally restore it will be about $2,500, but that wouldn't even be a down payment on a new $32-36K 4-WD truck... heck, my house didn't even cost that much when I bought it in '79. I may even buy a bunch of camo color spray cans and repaint it myself... then I won't have to worry about getting a new paint job scratched up from the way I run thru the firebreaks, brush, etc. It's only gotten "STUCK" once and that was only because I "high-centered" when the side of a wash-out caved in.  I keep thinking about buying a "new" truck, but the "sticker-shock" and insurance quotes keep me coming back to my PowerWagon.  Besides, my current insurance is less than $100 per year and I figure I can get another 150-200K miles out of it.
 :D  :)    :P

My wife has a 4wd 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I have an 89 2wd Cherokee (both with 4.0 straight sixes), a 78 GMC truck with 350 hp engine, a 77 Chevy Suburban with 300 hp engine, and an 85 Ford F150 with 300 straight six, and my 15 year old son is building (slowly working on) a 52 GMC truck with one piece fiberglass front end all mounted on a Chevy S10 chassis.   We also have way too many other vehicles but they are not trucks or SUV's.  IT IS A SICKNESS.  :-)

Got a pair of Fords. Ya mean someone else makes truck?  :-D

1992 Bronco and 1986 F150 long bed. Both are 4X4 and have about 150,000 on them. I am a VERY low mileage driver. Since I retired I seldom drive 5,000 per year. Even before retirement 10,000-12,000 was a heavy driving year for me.

I got a 4wd Chevy Tahoe that I drive daily, the fiance drives a 4wd Toyota 4Runner. I also have a '86 Ford Ranger 4wd with a 3" lift, 31x10's, a set of off road lights and an 8000 lb winch. I picked up the Ranger from a friend that was getting a divorce. I've made it a project truck working on it here and there. It works well for me, the truck is light enough that it won't sink up in a muddy cornfield and the 4wd is geared low enough that it will usually walk it self out of a mud hole. I drive this truck during hunting season and during "in the ditch" bad weather..

I have always been a Chevy man for the most part.  My last Chevy I put 312 thousand miles on and then sold it for enough to have Gary Reeder do a conversion on a Blackhawk for me. The guy that bought it is still driving it and it is nearing 400,000.

Now my boys went out and bought our last company trucks, used, with about 60,000 miles on them. A 97 F150 and a 98 F250 Ford. They are supercab short boxes, 4x4s, 5.4 V8, Auto's with Lariate interiors . They were about $2500 less than a compairable Chevy.  We have put an additional 30,000 on the 150 and 90,000 on the 250. We had our first repair the other day. One coil went bad. I think I am becoming a Ford man.

It is unlikely I'll live long enought to see 300,000 on either of my trucks and for sure won't live long enough to see 400,000. Heck if I had enough money to drive that much I'd have enought to buy me a new truck.  :-D

« Reply #10 on: February 16, 2003, 09:04:29 AM »
In 82 bought a toyota pick up sr5 model, 5 speed great on gas and for the size decent ride and comfort drove 120,000 miles.... sold and bought a new 91 gmc extended cab with 5.7 and 5 speed trans. in 99 bought a 93 jeep wrangler sahara with 6 cylinder and 5 speed. In Feb of 2002 bought Dodge quad cab with 4.7 4 speed aod sold gmc pick up with 117,000 miles.
By far the best all round veichicle to date is the wrangler will go ANY WHERE! comfort and milage compromise no discussion! Your doing what others are wishin to do 24 mpg on highway, 19 in the city and nothing stops except the babes when the top is down.....another added +.

The toyota was the best running and least maintence dollar as time went.

The gmc was the actual brute that would tow and haul six adults at call.

The dodge, as touted by the manufacture as comfort and ease of driving, yes. Power it does not have, looks and modern style +++
I perfer to keep everthing as factory stock, ease of repair and maintance better resale value to. Nothing says trouble as aftermarket parts when going to a dealer for repair or warranty work. Plus most of the time modifications only lead to more complexity that in the long run resluts in compromise of something else down the road. As far as additonal chassis modifications i have found that the gain is only another reason for more war stories that have led to more finanical woes due to stresses that were not intended for the vechicle. I'd rather have more trips, more pieces of iron and stainless in my collection that will give greater return and hold dollar value par outlay.

Overall the wrangler let it rain, snow, beach sand or trees hose it out and go. Lets face it jeeps are what everthing else is patterned after............

I drove a 98 Dodge Dakota till a couple of months ago and I have to agree that it is the smoothest ride you will ever get from a truck.  I just recently purchased a 2002 Chevrolet 3500 with teh 8.1L V8 in it.  It is a horse.  You won't find to many trucks that will compete with this one when it comes to towing.

Dodge is good
« Reply #13 on: February 17, 2003, 08:17:58 AM »
The new dodge is good, but power from the 4.7 is fair. Is power all that is needed? Then look into either the 5.7 hemi.... great power but terrible gas or go the route of the diesel.
I have a family of 2 girls and wife and now on our second dog (another female) comfort says #1 first. That is why I keep the wrangler for the fun stuff.
If going to the range  70 miles out.... it is the dodge for comfort and crusise. If it is pheasant hunting in the nov thru dec winter stuff... you got it the wrangler. Got to admitt, it is nice having the ability of doing what ever with what ever and always having a great time.

Back to the dodge, in feb. of 2002 they had the 7 year 100,000 mile power train/drive train for 40 days that is what sold myself. Figured my oldest would be out of colledge and my youngest would be 2 years left. Hence all major covered by warranty. Ford and GMC only 3yr 36,000 but offered to buy the extended for thoudands more. Still, when i reflect on the price of this truck and the fact it sits parked 2 to 3 weeks at a time the warranty will go a long way with myself. Power wise, did I really need it as with my other GMC.....was it ego that reigned............... Test drive the quad cab, my 16 year old handles it very well

If you are gonna get a dodge and look for the power you have to go with the new high output 6cyl Cummins diesel.  It is very fuel effecient and more than enough power for any kind of normal pickup duties.

I own 2 trucks or at least 1 Truck and 1 SUV. When I bought my 93 Bronco we called it a Truck not some damb sissy SUV name. SUV is some how just wrong if you know what I mean. That Bronco has towed a fleet of Boats over the years and hauled lumber, block, decoys, hunting and fishing stuff, and heard of deer. It now smells like wet retrieverand wares like an old pair of boots, what more could could you ask of it. Additionally it has over 150,000 miles on it and still looks and runs great.
My second Truck is a new F350 4x4 Ford Power Stroke Diesel 4 door. I love it. It runs great, and is an eye catcher. But has not quite worn on me like my Bronco has.
By the way it has started hauling heards of deer this year.
I hope it will serve me as well as the Bronco has.

Didn't a song say "you could set my truck on fire and roll it down a hill but I still wouldn't trade it for a coupe de ville." I know what they mean God I love my trucks.
The more I meet new people, the more I like my dog.

Mt daily get about vehicle is a 97 Ford Ranger Extended Cab 4X4, 4.0 eng w/automatic transmission, with hard tonneau cover.  My long distance vehicle is a 95 GMC Yukon 4X4, leather, power, 5.7 engine w/automatic transmission.  (It's the one I've been driving in this heavy East Coast snow, now slush).  My wife's vehicle is an 02 Subaru Forrester AWD.  Because of the 4X4 and AWD, I haven't bothered to shovel my driveway except where the plows dumped a wall of snow at the end, and around the mailbox.  (Notice who has the newest vehicle.)

1999 Chevy Silverado 4X4 full size, V8 with air assist helper springs that increase my capacity to 5,000 lbs. to carry the camper.

Most Alaskans though use diesel trucks and plug them in at night.  My next truck will more than likely be a Ford F250 4X4 diesel. My son sells them so I get something like 4-6K off the price.

I got me a 97 F-350 V-10 with 180,000 miles. Not bad on gas. Only had to change tires and brake pads, THATS ALL! There's still a teenager's heart in this 50 year old body, and I love it when this old Ford can beat most anybody away from the stop light. When it dies, it'll be another Ford V-10 for me.

Have owned a'67 Datsun, a'67 Ford 250, a 59 Ford f-100,73 Ford F-100 and a 85 Toyota. I currently own the Toy. It has 180,000 miles on it and is running strong. Like most the frame started rusting in two so I welded metal on it to hold it together. The bed rotted off and it now had an Aluminum Bed on it. The 4-wd works good and it goes through the snow well. Rides like a lumber wagon without 500 #'s in the back though. Still I am going to milk it for all it will give me. The new ones ain't worth what there asking and I don't beleive in making my insurance company rich, or the state for plates either.

just bought my first vehicle a month ago.....it's an 87 Ford Bronco II.  4 speed overdrive and four wheel drive.
I mainly bought it for hunting purposes but it will also be on the road to get me to and from work.
I have seen these trucks in the woods and i will say that nothing will beat them!!!!  With the short wheel base it can make in nearly anywhere.
Just put about $300 worth of tender loving care into it.  Valve cover gaskets, fuel filter, oil changed, fuel pump, new seats, tailgate....and some other odds and ends.
Eventually i'll cut the fenders for some fender flares, bigger tires, lift, driveshaft....and if i have some more money left over a good paint job!!!
