Hunting Rounds For 45 Long Colt
« on: February 15, 2005, 06:49:00 PM »
My dad just recently gave me his 45 Long Colt. Its the "old model" Ruger Blackhawk, the 3 screw model. I want to hunt deer with this gun, but I'm not sure if its strong enough to handle the high pressures of the strong loads that have to be used since its this old.  By the way, I'm talking just factory loads. I don't handload, yet,    What loads can be used if any? Can someone please help me?!?

Personally I would take it to a good gunsmith and have him look it over and let him tell you if it would be good for the stronger hunting loads. I don't think there would be a problem, but just to be on the safe side.  :D

If you don't reload, then your looking at Buffalo Bore or Cor-Bon for high performance factory loads. After you buy a couple of boxes of that super expensive stuff you will probably want to start reloading. :)

Take Redhawks advice.  Any old gun should be checked over by a competent gunsmith before being fired, especially with hot loads.

If you are worried about the full pressure loads check out buffalo bore ammo. They now have standard pressure ammo that is good for hunting and is safe in any firearm.

Mossyoak, Ruger started manufacturing the 3 screw blackhawks in the 50's. They are strong guns and will handle any factory 45LC ammo. As long as the gun is reasonably tight and no bulges in the barrel or cylinder it is safe to shoot with any factory load.

Having said that you don't need high pressure loads to deer hunt. They will not kill any deader than milder loads . There only advantage is a little more range. A flat nose bullet either cast or jacketed of about 250grs loaded to about 900-1000fps is a great deer load and will shoot through almost any deer. You need nothing more. Regards, Byron

Mossyoak,

I bought a three screw in 56 or 57 and used it for every thing with hot hand loads and when i traded it for a new one it was tight as new. Sad part of the story is the old three screw was a lot better gun than the new one was. If the gun checks out to be ok it will handle any thing you can stuff in it. Oh by the way i have a few ruger NMs and i would gladly trade you one for your old worn out three screw...OK i didn't think so... Good luck..............Joe.................

Nope, not any that you can shoot anyway.  They expect to have some available "Summer 2005".  Time will tell if they meet that availability date.  The load specs look good for SAAs etc BTW.   :D
