First post here, Ive been lurking for a few weeks and seeing as my new baby is arriving soon, I thought I'd register and join the family  :D

Anyways....

I ordered the VLS in .308. Ive already got the bipod, case, cleaning rod, bore guide, scope, rings, base, ammo, you name it.

I was wondering if any here have shot this rifle in .308.

I grew up around them, my uncle has two of them in 6mm and .223. At the age of about 15, I got a woodhuck here in Ohio at almost 450 yards with the 6mm. Since that day, Ive been inlove with the VLS. Well 15 years later, and after owning a plethora of Remingtons(its the only company Ive ever loved and Im not about to change that)..I finally ordered the VLS.

Ive found some sites where others have said this gun is not that great for for this caliber but I have a hard time believing that. Theres no reason it shouldnt be a tack driver like the others I shot.

Should be in tomorrow or Friday...I am very impatient!!!!!

Congrats on the new gun. Have no experience with it whatsoever. I've always heard good things about the .308, as I'm sure you have. Then again sometimes it's the gun just as much as it is the caliber.

thanks for the welcome. I must say, you guys rock. as you can see in this thread..

my gun came with copper fouling at the end of the muzzle. Greg and the forums wonderful owner chimed in within minutes to put my mind at ease. It didnt even dawn on me that it might be copper until they mentioned it.

But anyways, the scope, rings and base arrived earlier. I got a few different boxes of ammo to start the process of finding out what she likes the best. I havent decided on wether or not ill do some loading of my own. My uncles have all the toys to do so, I just might start.

Ill be sighting her in this weekend hopefully(assuming I get this copper fouling removed).

*Drooling*. Absolutely lovely gun. Sorry I didn't see your concern earlier, most copper fouling, with right treatment, can be removed easily.

Glad to hear ya like Remington Forum. It's a fairly peaceful forum (there are a select few who make me say 'fairly' and not '100%', but we won't mention names :roll: ). Enjoy your stay, kick off yer boots and come on in!  :D

Thanks, Ive had it for 2 days and Im still drooling. sighting her in come 9am(7 hours!), I cant sleep! got the fouling out finally.

As someone once said, "Poor people are crazy. I'm eccentric." I don't think your poor b/c that rifle certainly isn't cheap. So you must be eccentric to go out into this cold. Yes indeed.... :D

not quite eccentric, just inlove!

after spending 4 hours freezing, and coming close to losing my trigger finger due to frostbite... I can now stay calm enough, enough to tell you how much I love this rifle!!!!! Now mind you, I was sitting in on frozen plastic, with winds, not ideal conditions, not even close.

I had the bipod extended to full length which made it unstable sitting on a tree trunk, hey its the best I could do...

The odd thing is I did NOT have to touch windage or elevation! How wierd is that! Ive never had it so easy! This super sniper scope is great.

It likes different ammo from different companies. Federal American Eagle FMJ 150 grain, Federal Power Shok pointed soft point 150 grain, Remington Core Lokt pointed soft point 150 grain.

ALL 3 were great, something I couldnt say about the Rem 700 .30-06 I had.

Heres the pic!!! and one of my friend shooting it. He didnt get any of me!!  :evil:

hmm....

cleaning her real good but that copper fouling is at the same spot, and only there again. Its coming out a lot easier than it did 2 days ago, but is this normal?

I shot about 25 rounds today, cleaning every 5 or 6 rounds. Not a great cleaning mind you, a quick patch with shooters choice then a bore snake run thru. I thought this would prevent the fouling at the muzzle.

will this always happen? My other Rem rifles did NOT do this. But this is by far the most accurate Ive ever owned.

Ill post this in the other thread to as it gets more traffic and someone can chime in soon.

Ya kno, I haven't the slightest idea. I've never had a problem with copper fouling. If you don't know what it is, it's the copper left from when the bullet flies down the barrel. What makes the jacketing do that, is beyond me. You're better of asking someone else. But that fouling can ruin accuracy, so you best get it out when you see it.  :D

its only at the muzzle so im thinking it gets tighter than normal down there. I just had a guy email me saying to stop cleaning so much and just shoot.

Im starting to agree. I still had some copper in there today when I first shot and if thats bad accuracy, then I can live with that  :-D

little update...

100 yards, same Federal and Remington ammo as last week. I gave up trying to remove every spec of copper fouling, and as of right now, it doesnt hinder performance whatsoever.

There are 25rounds on this target  :lol: I am still just breaking her in and looking for consistency. by golly I got it!

Excuse my excitement, Im still just thrilled with this rifle. Ive been around them for years, so why I'm surprised at its performance is beyond me. And I decided against any bedding/free floating. Its far too consistent for me to touch. With my luck, I'd ruin it anyways.

My Lordy...those are some groups. 5 shots within a dime at 100 yards. Now if I could just get MY rifle to do that... :) . Of course, a scope always helps :-D . Nice to see you're getting good results out of that gun. I assume you're only use it for deer...that'll knock em flat. Whoo. Good luck!  :D

Id like to get some elk with it, and who knows what else. Im picking up a Sendero SF or a LSS in either 7mm Mag or 300 Mag in the coming weeks, just to have something with more punch if need be.

The dime grouping is 3 rounds, the penny one is 6 rounds, with the slight shanker to the left. The center grouping is 10 shots, maybe 11, I dont recall. Those were the first shots fired on the day. The more fouled the barrel got, the more they moved right towards the center.

I should have shot more to see when the accuracy started failing. I'll do that next time maybe. And here I was all worried about barrel cleaning and perfection. Im just going to enjoy her from now on  :D

Yea really, don't spoil her now :) . You talk about a rifle with more punch. Why dont' you look at the Mountain Rifle? Well, LSS is one of them but how bout the DM? Personally, the DM looks nicer plus you have the advantage of a magazine over a floorplate (which might be an advantage). Just my :money:  :D

I want something different. I had the Mountain rifle, and while I liked it, I dont know if I want to get another right now. I should have kept the one I had, silly me.

I made a list of 4 rifles I want, and the DM placed 3rd, so its a possibility. I might get all 3, I'm a Rem fanatic  :-D

Im selfish, atleast im honest about it  :D I shall indeed die with the most toys.

if you knew the $$ I had wrapped up in paintball, motorcycles, and home theatre, youd call me insane. Im sure you might already do that  :shock: Heck, I know I have issues  :-D
