Which Glock is for me?

I am considering purchasing a Glock sometime this year. The main purpose would be as a sidearm while I am hunting. Lately I have been hunting on a relatives farm in Alabama and while I am going out to the shooting house in the morning I can hear the coyotes just inside the woods. My freind has a Glock 33 which I shot and did fairly well with for never shooting an automatic before. I would like something a little more than .357 Sig though. I am considering one of the 10mm models or 45 GAP. Which one would you recommend?

Check out the Cor-Bon web site.  For hunting purposes, they have some great bullet combinations available in pistol calibers.

Glock mdl 20, Mike. Without a doubt!  Flat shooting and powerful. What more could you want? The 45s are not the best field guns due to their trajectory.The 357 SIG would be a better second choice. Good hunting.

I agree with Savage.  Get a G20 in 10mm.  I'd look for one with adjustable sights.  If you reload, which I recommend for this caliber, you can get bullets weighing from 135grs up to 200grs.  If you don't reload, check out this link http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_25  They've also got ammo for other calibers.  One more thing, if you get the G20, you can get conversion barrels for .40 S&W and .357 Sig.  I don't think you need anything else for the conversion, but I could be wrong.  That's my :money:

Thanks for the information. I am a registered user at Glock talk and have read up on both the 10mm and the 45 GAP. I think I will probably go with the 10mm as it seems to be the preferred round for hunters on Glock Talk.

Hey Mike,
 Noticed you are at Eglin AFB and hunt in Alabama, so am I and so do I, if that makes sense. Just some FYI since you are considering the Glock, I'm sure you know where Jimmy's is, they have been authorized to sell Glocks to active duty military at law enforcement prices. That fact is swaying me from the XD-40 to a Glock in the near future!!

LOL, I understand what you are saying. I will have to check on the prices for them at Jimmy's. Last time I went I saw there normal prices and they seemed a bit high.

The Model 20. The .357 Sig shines best with the 125 grain bullets for me. But I wouldn't trust them near as much as a 180 or 200 grain bullet for deer.

Yeah, Jimmy's can be kinda high, but it is convenient to shop there. If they are authorized to sell at those prices, you might want to check with some of the other guys around to see if they are more competitive. Might be worth a trip to Crestview or Defuniak!! Good luck!

I have a G20 10mm with a 5" KKM barrel & a 22lbs recoil spring. I shoot 135gr bullets @ 1750fps and 200gr bullets @ 1300fps or I can down load to 40 S&W velocities. The 10mm does everything all the other rounds available in Glock's can do and everything they can't.........

Having been confronted by wild dogs in Alabama a time or two during my youth, my preference would be either the Model 20 or the Model 21.

A .357 will not always knock down a larger dog or coyote, and a .45 does, in my experience.  I imagine the 10mm would do as well as the .45.

I recently bought a M-21, and chose it over the M-20 because I'm already set up to load .45 acp, and I don't see enough practical difference between the +P .45 loads and the 10mm loads to set up for another caliber.

Sorry it has taken me so long to post. I went and checked out the local Glock Armorer, Jimmys. I can get a .40 full size (forget model) for $409 before taxes due to the new Glock deal. Sound good?

That sounds pretty good to me.  I paid right at $500 for my G17 a couple of years ago.  I probably could have found it cheaper, but I got it at a local gun shop that always treated me good.  If I were you, I'd buy it.

One more question, sorry. Would it make more sense to buy the Glock 22 and later buy a .357 Sig barrel for it. Or buy a Glock 31 and later buy a .40 barrel for it? I don't know if one of them has a different frame or not.

The 22 and 31 are the same frame & slide. If you plan to shoot a lot, I'd get the 22 first. The .40 ammo is cheaper than the .357 Sig. A couple hundred bucks will get you a good barrel for the conversion later on.

I finally picked up my new Glock 22 today! Yeah for me.... LOL

Along with it I picked up a Blackhawk CQC holster with Serpa retention. Seems to be very nice. Now if the rain would just let up I would go to the range and shoot it a little. :D

Congrats Mike!! I picked up my G23 last Friday, but have yet to get a chance to shoot it, don't know if it will work with a week's worth of drool all over it!!!
 I even tried the indoor range over on Beal, but he is shut down for a few days for repairs!! This weekend is supposed to be nice, so I'll will run a 100 or so rounds through it!!

Mike,
 It is just south of Yatch Club Drive, on the left hand side of Beal Pkwy. The guy that owns it now is really trying to get it nice and get more customers in there. He only has two lanes, but for around here, thats not bad!!
He should be opening up again this week, unless he ran into more issues!!

I stopped in there at lunch today and he said he would be open tomorrow. The prices seemed kind of steep though. $20 an hour if you bring your own ammo, $10 an hour if you buy his. I think I am going to go take the test on base so I can shoot at the range there. It is $35 for the whole year. I did go to Crestview's range on Sunday and had some fun with it!

Yeah, the price is kinda steep, but when it is raining or dark out, you can still go shoot!! I had joined the Hurlburt club several years ago in anticipation of the range opening up, it didn't and I got tired of waiting. I hear it is open now, but when and how often? Also, I thought it was a lot more than $35 a year, I'll have to go check that out too!!
 I've shot my rifles up at the range in Crestview and like it too, I want to got shot their shooting clays range too.  
 I went up to Guns-4-U on Sunday and shot my G23 for the first time, I liked it, but was hitting low and right, it was consistant low and right so I'll have to play with it a little to get it in the bullseye. I was shooting with my buddy who has the Springfield XD, which I like, but didn't think it was any better than the Glock.

To get a membership on Hurlburt you need to be there at 0900 on any Saturday to take the test. It is open book, so not really a big deal. The fee is $35 per year. If you do not participate in a range clean-up day your fee for the next year is $70.

When I went to Crestview on Sunday I shot at 10 yards and 20 yards. Here is a link to my 10 yard target that I scanned.

I'm going to have to go check out the Hurlburt range, that is too good a deal to pass up. I read their SOP on-line and it seems like a good set up. That is some pretty good shooting, I was hitting low and right(I'm left handed) so I think I need to get used to the trigger, it isn't an SA trigger, but I shouldn't torque the gun so much!!
I was using the Winchester white box from W-mart, they are only $16 for 100 rnds! Of course they aren't JHPs either!!

I'll probably head over there next Saturday to take the test. I am working in the morning this Saturday so I will miss it. I will be going up to Crestview on this Saturday afternoon though. I am going to try to get my Army Ranger instructor freind to come teach me some things.  :lol:

Yeah, I hope to get over there soon, I plan on turkey hunting this weekend so it might be a week or two. I'd like to find a good self defense instructor around here. I took a great class a couple of years ago, but didn't have a pistol to keep my skills up, it is amazing how far a little instruction and a lot of practice can do for you!!!

Well I finally went and got a membership to the Hurlburt Rifle and Pistol Club. I used the facilities today, had a great time shooting my Glock 22 and my Remington 600 6mm.

If your intended Glock is for hunting yes by all means the G20 and don't look back.  You can purchase a 6" hunting barrel for it as well.  8)
