I'd take a Tikka any day of the week.  I dont think anything will touch it out of the box for being a shooter.

:D For my $500.00 I would try my darnest to locate a nice used 788 Remington. Check the rifling to be sure it is ok too.I never have seen or heard tell of one that would not shoot. If you find a 222,it can be rechambered to 223 very easy.Just my choice,I am CAL....

Tikka"s are just a cheaper make of Sako. Nothing wrong with them though. I just love the quality that went into the Sako.

[RJK2475 - [/b]  check out my post under bolt action rifles "Remington 700 Lemon"   After speaking with a few firearms dealers the one constant theme was "Remington quality is downhill"

My .223 Remington 700 maybe just one in bunch that was bad, but the comments from every dealer I spoke with is alarming for the Remington quality reputation.

Don't overlook the Howa line of rifles either.  I picked one up last month in .223 and out of the box with Black Hills Reman. Ammo it printed .5" groups consistently.  For the money you get a lot of rifle, not to mention good looks!
Good luck,
Steve

Hi Guys, This is my first reply in this forum. I think that you cant go wrong with a heavy barreled Savage. 110v, 110 fp. I consitantly get .5 or smaller goups @ 100 yrds. It sure po'd some shooting buddys that paid too much for their Rugers and Remingtons.
It aint the gun nut. Its the nut behind the trigger.

Cal hit the nail on the head, M788 unless you want something pretty to look at, but if you want something that shoots all the time and will always be accurate, get the 788.

2475 as you can see there are several different oppimions from several knowledable shooters and all of them with good suggestions that fit THEM here is what I would suggest find a dealer and explain to him what you are in the market for and try several and see which one you like the feel of the best, we all like something different about a gun when we hold it I dont know what it is cant explain it but you will know the one when you get it in your arms.  Good luck Oh by the way I really like the howa 1500 over several of the others I have it has something that says take me today with you when I leave the house go figure. :D   JIM

2475 the only thing I can say is I just like it I have a Ruger mark2 ss lam. 223 and a blue rem. 700 also in 223 and I just like the howa it is the one that goes out with me on a daily basis here on the farm, I got it from a friend at the last gun show threw a old swift 4x12 I had here in the shop shot it on our range and it does at a in. when I have had my coffee in the mornings.  The others will do as well but I like the way the howa fells and if it feels good and shoots good it dont have to have a fancy name on it to satisfy me, I dont need to spell my guns name with capital letters to make a point I just like it, look at one they are the co. that made the jap. weatherbys, I think you might like what you see. :D   JIM

My Howa shoots .5 MOA outta' the box, with no mods.  It's a nice looking gun that shoots very well, especially for the money.  The trigger is adjustable, although it is no great trigger, it is still better than most of the more expensive offerings.  Check out the website at :

Best wishes,
Steve

RJK2475  - just bought a new Tikka .243 M595 Syn stock/blue action $439 bucks.  One reason was the uniform positive comments for Tikka rifles on this site.  The feel was great, very smooth, and this past weekend at the range it shot three round groups at 100 yrds I could cover with a dime in some cases, a nickel in all, shooting off a sandbag.  Four types of factory ammo.
Very satisfied!!!  I would include the Tikka Rifle line in your search.

2475- Found just one Tikka in the local gun stores here in the Seattle area, but it was a 22-250 which I didn't want.  Using the internet, I did a search with "gun auctions" and got connected to a guy here in Washington state about an hour away who stocks several Tikka's, Sako's, etc.  His website is eastcountyguns.com.  I called him, went to his shop, bought the Tikka.  He sells over the internet, has great customer satisfaction feedback and knew his firearms.

You can go to     GunBroker.com and do a search for 'Tikka' and most likely the rifles for sale will be his.  You can review his ratings at this site too.

Hope this helps.

By the way, why a .223?  That's what I bought first, but after getting better informed, for my occasional light praire dog shooting, serious fox/coy and deer hunting the .243 is great.  I've also read/been told that the .243 is ok on black bear/elk?? BUT that is the subject of another post.

rjk2475, I'm from PA too. I have a WinM70H-B Stainless Varmint that I customized myself as an 'NRA across the course' rifle with stripper clip feed, hand rail, Redfield-Palma rear and Olympic aperature front. I put a Mo's adjustable  in/0ut-up/down buttplate palte on it, installed a JEWEL trigger and shoot it ALOT! It'll shoot 'x's all day long with 55 to 75 Horandys. It is an awesome rifle that you can get into for under $600 and cutomize as you like, or scope it and shoot it forever. Ehen I shoot every weekend, about 300 rds per month go through it. some matches are only 58 shot matches. Full 600yd course is 88 rds.  The M70HBV was the heaviest I could find. I will probably re-barrel it in a yr or two. I shoot my AR in some matches now. The M70 gets rested.  Surplus is great for plinking and such. PS-All custom stuff was from Mo's in Mass/Conn??
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

I don't have a digital yet., and the scanner is down. BUT, the rifle is my pride and joy! With a few screws, I can bolt on my Leupold Tactical and have an absolute 'chuck-spankin' or anythingelse that get is the scope, super accurate rifle. Where are you in PA?
