The military Uzi's are sand-blasted and parkerized as a base for paint to hold onto. Paint is easy to renew when beat up and scratched.

Hello, I was just curious, has every body enjoyed my pictures? I'm planing on maybe starting a model of a 9" Dahlgren shell gun in the near future and was wanting to know if pictures and comentary would be appreciated? I don't mind, It's been kind of fun. Thanks in advance for your input.

Ive found it very useful.

There is always something new to learn. It is a lot easer seeing what someone else has done first before starting something. Every once in a while I find a technique that I didnt know before or a trick Id never thought of.

By all means continue.

Keep up with the pictures we are all getting ideas.

As far as paint goes if you see the originals and they are painted, cheap does not come to mind. Apply a good coat of primer and gloss paint on the highly polished metal and those barrels look like black glass! Beautiful. I think some of the big shooters actually use automotive paint.

Those highly polished blued modles with bare wood finish are pretty. But once you see carriages properly painted olive drab and the barrels and metal painted gloss black you will never look back.

You have to do at least one to convince yourself.

Love the pictures! If only I had a lathe & mill, I would be actively building them too. For that not cheap bling bling look, you could try gold plate. :lol: My wife likes guns better when they are covered in gold. She is usually not interested in firearms of any type, but when she sees one that is gold plated, she often says "Ooh, that's pretty. You can buy me one of those if you want." I think Gold plate would look good with a dark walnut with a deep finish. :-)

Hey, I made a little more progress on my beer can mortar. I finally got around to puting the finish on the barrel. I used two coats of Birchwood Casey's Plum Brown. It turned out really even. It is a little darker than I thought it would be though. Didn't photo very good. Mabey I can get started on the carriage this weekend. Later,

Or TiN (plated with Titanium Nitride) for the same good look of gold and a very durable finish. "Presentation model".

Hello, The brown one I traded the tube for some more shaft. The recipent is planing on building a carriage. The other one is going to a guy I work with. He want's his blued, I'll post pictures when its finished. I have some Hickory for his carriage.
