My gunsmith tells me there is excessive headspace in my 7600. This is a .243 that I bought used. He told me not to shoot it and replace the barrel. Where can I find a new barrel?

Contact Remington....if it's out of spec they should fix it. I don't know the condition of the head space problem ( too much go, meaning the no-go closes..etc). But, the gunsmith should be able to set the barrel back into the block, a turn or two, re-align the sights or drill and tap new ones, plug the old ones and clean it up the chamber to correct specs.

You have to replace the barrel on a 7600 if you have excess head space. The barrel doesn't screw in like a bolt action.

Dave...I thought the brl was screwed into block on 7600 ? Remington won't sell what I call the brl block (not the reciever). But you can re-use the orginal one. I was asking my gunsmith about change brls on 7600

and the only way is to get a brl with the block from Remington.
and he said" no big deal", I just re-use your brl block with the new brl.
I asked if he could re-brl with a Douglas or shiln barrel and he said no problem. He showed me a 7600 torn all down and the brl was out of the block(not the reciever), I was positive the barrel out of the block was threaded. Are you saying it's pressed into the block ? I assumed all that needed to correct the headspace problem was set the brl backinto the block.

The 760/7600 rifles have a tang that is on the bottom of the barrel. There is a bolt that runs from inside the receiver, through the barrel block and tang on the barrel and into the action tube . The holes in the action tube are for tightening or loosening the action tube on the bolt. Think of the action tube as the nut that holds the barrel on not just the part the forearm slides on. If you go online to e-gunparts.com and look up 760 rifles you can look at an exploded parts diagram and see what I'm talking about. The 760 diagram is better for understanding the relationship of how the parts go together.
