After reading my copy of the rules, muzzle brakes are OK for Hunter Pistol? Not allowed in IHMSA...also any manufacturer for approved calibers, not just Thompson and Fox Ridge for the Contender & Encore?

I can't speak for the NRA rules, but a muzzle brake is not allowed in IHMSA unless the barrel plus brake equals 12" in length.  Also, only T/C & Fox Ridge barrels are production legal in IHMSA for Contender, G-2, & Encore frames.

Not too many NRA silhouette shooters check in here.  Muzzle brakes are an interesting item.  For real hunting they are worthless, you just are not shooting very many rounds on a hunting trip and they will destroy your hearing in short order.  I see that Marlin has removed them from their 45-70 Guide gun, its about time!  For the games they are bothersome to the other competitors.  IF you have the rules are they written so poorly that you can't tell what is allowed?  I am out of "sanctioned" silly wet so I can't help you.  Seems it has too many rules anyway for a simple game.

My version of the NRA rules dates to Jan 1997, hence may be null and even void.   Rule 3.1 Hunters Pistol indicates barrel length limited to 10 3/4 inches.  Magnaporting or similar gas venting is allowed.  Since this is integral with the barrel, it adds no length.  Also only barrels from the same manufacturer are allowed.

I have been told, (haven't seen anything in print) that since T/C no longer makes 10 inchers, now 12 inchers are the maximum.  Not allowing Bullberry and Fox Run barrels doesn't make a lot of sense, so maybe that's been changed too.

It is a great game.  The guys I shoot with try not to get so caught up in rules that the fun leaks away.

It is true that T/C no longer makes the 10" barrels.  They must be ordered out of Fox Ridge.  Fox Ridge barrels are allowed in Production, other barrels are not.  There seems to be some interest in getting all manufacturers barrels approved for Production.  This will not happen, however, unless people propose rule changes and get after their Regional Directors to vote the change in.
