I agree that the 14 is more than enough, but the 12 gives you the possiblilty of shooting longer slugs like the Barnes.
IMHO the 12 is too fast and I read recently that it may be the cause for problems with the .375 and penetration because even the 300 is spinning tooo fast.
The article had to do with a head shot on a cape buff that took a sharp turn while it should have penetrated straight. I think that they upped the weight to 350gr and got better performance.
I actually shot a small buck (120#) with my #1 and while I expected the slug to zip right through, it actually hit the shoulder on an angle and did a 90deg knocking out a section of the chops and the other shoulder as well.
The bullet stayed inside the deer and the shot was only 30 yds :shock:
I have the 300gr slug (now about 220gr). I expected Federal's load to do more. I was very surprised.
