GBO Handi-Haulic stock/gun thread
« on: February 17, 2005, 09:36:36 PM »
Here we go.  A thread for he proposed GBO Handi-Haulic gun/stock thing.

My suggestion is that we forget the gun and stick to a medallion inlaid in a stock.  A simple inexpensive straight walnut stock like the one at Gunstocks inc.  It's relatively simple and doesn't involve dozens of FFL holders for distribution.  Gunstocks, inc. might even be able to do the inlaying and we can eliminate NEF from the process entirely.  I also like their Schnable forearm.  I do wish they offered drop in fully finished stocks tho.

I'd buy one! I bet they'd sell 50. I wonder what the cost would be to set up something like that?

I sent Gunstocks inc an email explaining to them what was rattling around our collective skulls along with a link to the 2 threads here.  I asked them to either reply to me with their thoughts or to respond directly to the threads.

Sounds good.  I'm in.  I think this is definately the best route to go.  I would also like a mannlicher forend but I am not picky.  Now we have to get working on a medallion.  Any opinions <ain't that a stupid question!  :) >  on what we would like to see on one?

Hey guys,

While I don't want one for me, I think my dad needs one, last time I was over there between rifles and shotguns he has 7 of them. I only want two, a BC and a 7x57.  :-)  But who is Gunstocks Inc? I haven't heard of them before, I know dad would love a manlicher stock for his 30-06 Handi.

Greg, if you want one for him now, call H&R and ask for Jennifer, she still had some left 2 days ago!! They are $30.00 and $5.00 for shipping and you will have it in a week!!! (I ordered one, when they are gone, they are gone, have not been made in a while, they had some left in the back of the supply room!!))....<><....

HH thanks for taking the initiative.

I am in, what ever form the final product takes.  I support the decision to focus on a stock project given the simplicity when FFL's aren't required, and caliber decisions won't factor in.

I hope we can find a solution that is drop in.  I'm pretty much a hack when it comes to carpentry, and I'd hate to risk a fine piece of Handiholic furniture to my hands.

The one other point I'd make to all you reader's that want in but haven't posted,  post something if your committed.  If Gunstock's does check the thread,  They will want to see the level of interest.

Greg Gunstocks inc. is a sponsor on here. In fact I am looking at their clickable add as I type this. You can usually find it at the top of the page. Great looking stocks.
btw I think the Gunstocks idea is great.  Count me in.

I belong to a geocaching group in Alabama that has created a geocoin using a company called KV Coins. Take a look at the sample coins at the following link and see if something like this might make a good medallion. Our coin is the seventh one down in the left-hand column. They also make medals which would be closer to what we would need, but this will give you an idea of their capabilities.

Their reply:

Hello Ian,
After the last feasco with a group order we have found that there are a lot of people that like to talk and very very few that will actually place an order. We would need to know which stock you are thinking about, what type of wood, medalion size, etc. before I can give a price quote.
We would require all 50 orders be placed and payment received be fore the deal was finalized.

ED

My response:

Yep. I know exactly what you mean.  If it goes down, we would have one person designated to place and receive the order. You would only be dealing with one person and one delivery address.  We found a place that makes stamped coins, so we would supply the medallion.  It probably would be ~1.5" I'm guessing.  What we didn't know is if you could/would do the inlaying.  I'll get back to you with more details as they develop.

thanks,
Ian
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like minimum order for the medallions at both places suggested is 100 at $3-4 each.... so if we get 50 stock, everyone would have to agree to buy an extra medallion or have them inlaid into both sides of the stock.

Ok, sounds like we are moving forward with this project.  Don't forget the die fee for the coin and that it would be a 1 sided coin.  I propose a strait laminate stock and a mannlicher forend (if they would make one)  A coin on both sides of the stock would be interesting and I think desirable.  Let's keep going.

By my way of thinking, since the forend isn't going to be modified in any  special way, the ordering of the it can be on an individual level.. have a look at what they have, order what you want and have it delivered directly to you.  That is after we decide on finish, style etc.

Deciding on a stock style and kind of wood is not a huge issue in my mind, what is going to be the hump to get over is, who is going to design this medallion?  That is the make or break of this project.  I know I can't design my way out of a paper sack.  What I'd like to see on it tho is a reference to Graybeard Outdoors and "Handi-Haulic Edition" or "Handi-Haulics Anonymous"

any takers?

i think i'll give it a shot, but i wish others would chime in with their indeas of how they want it to look. I would like to see a pic of one of the medalions that NEF has already produced and the dimensions of it. But i really don't want this whole thing to depend on me. But i will give it a shot.

I'll commit to 2 stock sets.

I have bought one stockset from Gunstocks Inc for a .308 Handi project, you will NOT be disappointed.  Plan on getting another soon.

I would like see an option to just get the medallions as I'm happy with my stocks.  It would be easy to inlet and epoxy in the medallion.  I'd like to see a quality item.  Nothing cheap or cartoony looking.

Grampa Mike, how much work was it to finish your stock?  Lots of sanding or just a bit and slap on a stain or poly of some kind?

I think the medallion would be a cool idea. I don't know if we need the stock though.
I do like the idea of the Manlicher forend. I'm gonna have to do that part at least.
I got the little wheels turning now. hmmm maybe...

Need some more ideas, right track, wrong track?

HH have not started work on the stockset yet, will post photos and report when completed.  But not much sanding needed to fit.

I like it... I like it...

Question:  It's been suggested that we go one step further and ditch the stock and just have some medallions made.  How much support for this is there?  I kinda want a nice Monte Carlo stock with the Schnable forend.
