Ruger Single 6 ?
« on: February 18, 2005, 01:16:16 AM »
Hi all. I'm curiously considering a purchase of this. I am well aware of the 22lr versus 22mag differences, but my question is this: If the Ruger is sighted in well with the 22mag cylinder, using either iron sights or scope, how accurate will it be at close range for plinking if you switch to the 22lr cylinder? Since plinking at close range with the 22lr, would be close range, would it need to be re-adjusted or close enough?

My experience has been very little difference at close range which also depends on what ammo you are using for each cylinder. Simply changing brands can change POI by inches ! You just have to mix and match until you find what shoots best from each cylinder.

kmeyer-

Shooting iron sights my 22lr ammo and 22mag ammo are so close at 25 yards it doesn't matter much.

It likes Federal 50 grainers with the mag cylinder and Winchester Super X 37 grains for the lr.

I got lucky, not only is the elev very close at that distance but windage is good as well.

My gun is a CCG special so the 22lr is match grade chambers; I think that is helping it a little.  Prior to the conversion it liked same 22lr ammo but Winchester superx softpoints with nearly the same results (except now I don't get the occassional flyer anymore).

Could you tell me more about the CCG conversion you had done?

Thanks

As said, very dependent upon ammo.  With dime store Federal Lightings and WW 40gr HP mags I get the same point of impact.  Change either, and the deal is off.

I tend to agree with everyone else.  The only add I made was a "One Ragged Hole" for the back, helped me..

I went overboard with the modifications:  match grade bbl, match grade 22lr cylinder, bowen rough country rear site, new front site, belt mountain base pin, new grips, action job, jeweling, and a new 22 mag cylinder.

The one thing I will say is that if you can affor an FA, it's a better gun than a customized Ruger.  I was at the range yesterday with my CCG single six and my FA; the Ruger is a lot better than it was; still no comparison to the FA.  If you can afford the dough, go FA.

Note:  for the 25 yard POI match for the lr and mag - mine likes CCI TNT's and Winchester Super X's.
