Use for rabbit fur-question
« on: February 18, 2005, 02:25:44 AM »
I was thinking of trying to make some homemade items outta rabbit fur. Mittens, and mabie one of them trapper style hats. So, question time...

After skinning, what steps are need to keep the pelt in good condition for many years to come? Salting the "cape" is in the case of big game? Help.

Tips on fur care and sewing are welcome

I can't help you with the tanning process, but one other use is fly tieing material. The fur is used as a dubbing for fly bodies.

Thanks for the tip, NE hunter

Anyway, any hat or glovemakers still out there? Trappers/furtraders?

after skinning make sure you flesh the hide and remove any fat.  Then it is a matter of deciding whether you are going to tan it or have it tanned.  Tandy makes a good kit for small furs that works well.  Other methods of tanning with the hair on include using the alum method, or oils and working the hide until it is soft.

Then you need to decide what you are going to make.  rabbit can be turned into blankets by cutting it into strips and weaving the strips together.  makes okay mittens, but matts up when wet.  if using for winter hat, I recommend making a wool hat, then using the rabbit for the pull down ear flaps.
