Just picked up a S&W 16-4 32 H&R Mag. mainly for plinking & target shooting but was wondering if anyone out there does any hunting (small game) with this round.
If so, what bullet is preferred, Hornady XTP, lswc ?

I have a Ruger Single Six .32 with a 9 1/2" barrel that I have taken squirrel hunting and just general woods loafing. I've only tried one load out of it since I got it. It shot so well with that load I never saw a reason to change (a ragged hole at 20 yards). It is the Federal load using an 85 grain Hornady XTP. Price on these seems to be going up though, and it's probably time to get a set of .32 dies and start reloading for it.

85gr Hornady over 5.5gr 800X is pure poison on jackrabbits out of my 4 5/8" Single Six or 4" S&W 631. 100gr RCBS 32-098 over 5gr 800X good for everything. Bought cast 115gr over 4.5gr 800X will do when I'm too lazy to cast my own. 800X gets about all the speed and accuracy (one hole groups) without the blast and fireball of slower powders. Works from about 850fps to a little over 1100fps in my short barrels. Tried other powders but have'nt found a reason to change since 1986. Maybe a little Bullseye or 231 for target loads. Use the H&R case. A great many H&R's won't shoot the 32Long case. Mine won't. BOL
