which one?

I have a choice of three 14" barrels for deer hunting. Which one would be the best? No shots over 100yds.  41 mag., 300-221, 7-30Waters. Gee while we are at it lets throw in the 25-35.

Looks like any of them will work fairly well, but I can't say on the 25-35. I'm not sure that has the energy to take out a deer at 100 yards or not. Seems it might be a bit anemic.

I also agree. 30/221 is a bit on the weak side in my opinion...makes a great target round but has not lived up to velocities claimed in both barrels i owned.

25/35 is great to shoot but also sorta weak...  41 is pretty good, 7x30 more accurate at longer ranges if you ever do want to make a 200 yard shot.  my choice would be the .41 in a 10" or the 7x30 in a 14.

I agree, I've used the 44 Mag, 357 Max, 357 Mag, and 300 Whisper for deer.
All killed the deer I shot with them, but there was very little blood and the deer travelled over 100 yds after the shot (broadside lungs, at 35 yds) with the 300 Whisper.  The little doe I shot with the 357 Mag curled up and died within 40 yds. with the same basic shot.

7-30 waters.  You could shoot the ticks off a deers back at 100!

Get the Waters.

Thanks for the info guys. I was kind of leaning toward the Whisper. Looks like i'll stick with the 41 or the Waters.

Wow! I thought the 300 whisper could be loaded hotter with smaller bullets so that you could hunt deer with them.  SSK was claiming 2300 fps with a 125 grn bullet. That certainly seems like enough to pop a deer at 100 yards. So what's the skinny on the whispers? Not as hot as advertised?

BTW, I will always recommend the 7-30.

My Whisper was a 10" SSK barrel and I was getting 2000 fps with 125 gr bullets.  The deer I shot with it was only 35 yds out, so it hit with the same      authority a 14" barrel would at 100 yds.  It killed the deer but not much blood to follow.  I like my 357 Max better.

My thoughts on the 300 Whisper were the same as flatlanders. I have some Cor-Bon ammo in 125gr. & 150gr. If the weather ever gets better i'll run them over the crony and see what i get.  The reason i mentioned these 4 was i already have Contender barrels in these calibers.
