700CDL in 7-08. 24" hunting barrel, satin wood stock. 7-3/8 lbs.
My understanding is the barrel is not floated, but has a bump pad in the stock. I thought the 700's where floated?

Or

700VSF in 308. 26" heavy fluted barrel (floated), HS Precision composite stock. 8-1/2 lbs. Would this make weight (10lbs 2 ozs)with scope and rings?

Now I know that I could use the 700CDL for both Hunting and Standard rifle, and the VSF for std. rifle only. But I'm thinking that the VSF with a Jewell trigger would be far more accurate than the stock CDL. I think the stock configuration of the VSF would be OK for shooting offhand, and I'm thinking the weight would help with the recoil of the 308. But, I also know that the 7-08 is a more popular round though.

I'd go for the CDL since Remington doesn't want to make any full weight hunting rifles in S/Steel short actions with 308 bolt face.

or

buy a new cheap-o ADL, sell the factory new barrel and stock to recover a little money, then set it up for the game by getting a new barrel in a cartridge and demension of your liking and one of those new Nesika hunter stocks. In the long run you'll save a lot of money doing it right the first time.

Before you make a decision on the CDL, which has a more or less classic style stock, take a look at a BDL. Depending on your physical characteristics you may find that you can get a better stock weld on the BDL because of the monte carlo type comb on it. There is a reason why most silhouette stocks have a high comb - that is to enchance the cheek to rifle contact so that instead of a two point contact with the supporting arm and shoulder you add another contact point with the cheek. It is amazing how much this can add in additonal steadiness.

Thanks guys for your thoughts and info. I went with the Varmit Synthetic Fluted. I believe if I go with 2pc alum. bases and rings I should be able to stay under weight. Any suggestions for rings and bases?
I figure down the road if I decide to go with a thumb hole, high comb stock, I can get a few $ for this H S Precision to help cover the expense.
The reason I didn't go with the CDL is I don't deer or big game hunt so it would only serve me for HP silh. With the VSF I can maybe try 1000yd. BR or some other type of games perhaps. Besides, I can put on a Harris folding bi-pod and call it a "Long-Range tactical Weapon" :roll:
