I propably should post this on another thread, but wanted to tell you fellas here first.
My shooting buddy that just bought a Ultra Varmit 223 a couple of weeks ago was shooting with me today. We were at the 50yd. line. I was shooting a handgun and he was sighting in his Rem. Auto 17HMR. He had taken the scope off this gun and put it on his Ultra. So he had another scope and had put it on this gun. Well after about 5 or 6 shots, I hear a funny sound, not the crack like usual. I looked around and my friend was wiping his face and blinking his eyes. I asked what happend. He looked at his rifle and the bolt looked as if it was ready to fall off. He pulled the round out of the gun or should I say the spent case. We looked at it and sure enough A CARTRIDGE RUPTURE!! Even the rim was swelled badly. We found a part or two to the bolt, but really, its in pieces. Found some previously shot cases and they all were split from the mouth to below the shoulder. And.... he was shooting Remington Ammo.
Thank God he wasn't hurt.
Just thought I would tell you guys.

I think he should send the gun and all the ammo that ha has, fired and unfired, back to Remington and ask that it be inspected re: problems with the ammo or the gun. He should at least get a new gun and some ammo out of it. It's better than suing them!!!...<><.... :shock:

That's a common problem reported with semi-auto rimfires at RFC, the rifles fire before the bolt is in battery for some reason. An occasional split case happens in bolt guns, but for the most past it causes no harm, but when the rifle will fire when the bolt isn't all the way forward on an auto, what you saw is what you get....Glad no one was hurt.... :cry: Seems to me some were also caused by a weak spring....anyway you look at it, it's gotta go back for repair....

I had a 44 magnum case rupture on me in a used marlin lever action rifle.Believe me it sucks.I couldn't see for 10 minutes after it happened,and I was down in the woods by myself.I think it was the flash that blinded me.Luckily it didn't harm me ,I just set down where I was standing and waited to regain my vision.Needless to say I told the man I was thinking of buying the rifle from I didn't want it,and suggested he not fire it,and showed him the case that had ruptured.Send that rifle and ammo back to the manufacturer and request replacements. :shock: Hope your friend is ok.

Yea, my buddy is OK, just a little frazzled. I told him call Remington on Monday. I said if I were him I would ask for one of the new bolt actions, I think it's the 541? Anyway the one that looks like a centerfire, with a black forend piece. I think they should give him whatever he wants after what happened today.
My friend Chris, well...guns and him seem to be opposites. He is a widow of 10 years. His wife had just had their little girl about a month. His father-in-law had brought an old lever action over his house, could not get it to cycle, if I remember correctly. So his father-in-law left the rifle in the garage. So one day his wife was coming out of the house into the garage, when she shut the door to the house, the rifle fell sideways and fired, hitting her in the leg. The 30 cal. bullet entered the leg then traveled up and ran through her spine. He said she lived about 5 hrs. He was across the street helping some neighbors. He said it took about 9 years for him to get around guns again.
I helped him last year get into reloading. He's been through a lot.

I had a S&W revolver come apart on me once. I think it was probably too much Hodgdoon HS6. Anyway, it just gernaded. Nobody was hurt, but it was interesting.
