I am considering buying a Ruger Super Black Hawk model S-47N.  Are there any problems with this handgun?

There does seem to be a problem with the gun. Been hearing more and more of the problem with the barrels turning on you. Some to the extent the ejector housing screws are pulled out. I think Myronman had three of his do it to him. He now owns an FA83 instead.

yep.  three in a row, all bought at different times.   all different barrel lengths.   and there are more people out there than you would believe that have had this very problem.
would i advise against getting one?  no.  would i advise someone to get one? no.   long story short,   what i thought about the sbh before i bought them, and after i owned a few was very good.  after my expereinces when i started having problems with them my whole outlook changed.  i no longer make recommendations to anyone on which gun to buy.  i just share my experiences with those who ask.
for myself,  i have sold one sbhhunter,  dad has another, and i still have one in the closet (for now).  i have replaced the blackhawks with a freedoms arms model 83 44 magnum.   i will run it through the ringer this summer.  if the gun takes it, i will be ordering a model 97 in 44 special for chrismas.  if not,  look for a mass selloff of all my hunting handguns in the fall.  i love shooting them and hunting with them, but if i can t count one the f.a., i am going to swear off handgun hunting altogether.
   good luck.

When you say "barrels turning" what makes them do this? Was it the hunter model or just the SBH. I want to know what I need to look for. :|

I guess I'm kind of dumb, but I have to ask; is this barrel turning thing some kind of tongue in cheek humor, or is it true?

Howd'y SMG :D :
I would highly recommend getting a SBH, Also would recommend the Bisley Model it is very pleasant to shoot.
As far as problem's, with heavy loads the frame screws back out,
but a little lock tight and they are cured.
As far as barrel turning I guess it happens but this is the first I ever heard of it. As many a SBH that there are I think it safe to say that problem is few and far between, myronman3 will probly disagree I'm sure, at any rate Ruger will stand behind it and fix any problem that may occur.
I will be getting another real soon or a Vaquero (basically same gun).
The short of it "GET ONE"

couldnt tell you.  i had many conversations with folks at ruger about this, and no one had an answer.  a few tried to b.s. me at first, but quit when it became evident they didnt know much about the guns.   not only would the barrels unscrew, but the ejector rod housing flies off.  and man is it fun looking for your gun parts when your out and about.   :(    one gun was a hunter model, the other two were regular super blackhawks; one with a 4 5/8 bbl, and the other in at 10 1/2 bbl.

in the words of curt angle "oh it's true- it's damn true."   all too true if you have it happen to you.   and you know it will happen at the worst time possible.   for me, the first one went two days before season started.  no problem.  grab #two and bamm!!!!   same $#!*, different gun.

stand behind it they did.  way behind.  one gun i can understand.  but when one person has three guns do the same exact thing, and two within a day of each other, you would think ruger would be scrambling to make me a happy guy.  they did fix the guns,  one came back scratched all to hell and took about two months.  the other came home in better condition, but still took two months.    i aint mad, but i aint happy, either.

like i said, i wont advise one way or the other.  but now you know my expereinces with them.

Sorry to here of your bad experiance's with the SBH and Ruger.
I would be alittle put off by Ruger having that happen to me, and would probably look elsewhere also. Ruger and their firearms have been very good to me, no complaint's.

mine let go before i even hit 500 rounds fired.  all three, that is.   good luck with your guns.  i know i sure liked mine before all this happened.  never thought i would ever lay out the money for a freedom arms.  i figured the ruger was all i would ever need.   boy, was i wrong.

8) Myronman,

Are these SBHs of recent vintage ?  I have some older SBH models (none under ten years) old, and have not had this problem with loads up to the 350 gr. LBT, but I mostly shoot 300 grainers.  Please understand that I am not doubting that you had this problem.  I am just trying to determine  if this is problem exists with only recently manufactured SBH models, or does it occur across the entire range of manufacture.  Thanks.

two of them for sure were made within the last 5 years.  the third i dont know when it was made as  i picked it up used.

as a side note,  i have not had anyone tell me they had this problem with any of the blackhawks.   the  cases i have learned about  all involved superblackhawks.

8) I think it would be helpful to everyone if we could isolate this problem by production date.  The Ruger website has this information.  Click on Product Service, then on Serial Numbers, and then on Super Blackhawk.  I cannot post the year chart because posting is currently disabled.  The latest SBH I have was made in 1983, and I have not experienced this problem.  All 3 of my SBHs each have well in excess of a thousand rounds of heavy loads through them.  Regards.

I've got a SBH 4 5/8ths and have shot it in the thousands...300 grains, 240 grains...hot reloads, hot factory...no problems...
for me I don't like the bisley/FA grip shape...so I am kinda out of options for a 44mag in single action if I wanted to go elsewhere...
but as said...she has been fine...
