45/410 using the 45 for deer????
« on: February 20, 2005, 02:10:22 AM »
I purchased the 45/410 to carry while rabbit hunting with my beagles. I have taken 3 for 11 shots. Need more practice!!!!  As I have never used a pistol to hunt deer with I am VERY unfamiliar with pistol deer cartridges. Here in Ohio I do know that you can only use straight walled ammo in pistlols. How affective is the 45 Colt and at what ranges with a scope?  Please bare with me as I am new to this!!   Thank You !!!!!!!!  Ps did a search and did not find all my answers

I have found the 410/45L/C barrels not as accurate with the 45L/C rounds. But you should mount a scope and get out and shot it. You will be able to see how accurate the gun shoots and then practice a lot. You will also have to see what your limitations are for your range. I know other that have shot out to 100 yards MAX. Practice, Practice, Practice.  :D

You need to handload the 45 Colt or buy effective factory loads from a company like Corbon to get the most out of the 45 Colt.  With good ammo you have an effective range the same as a 44 Mag,  100-125 yds as long as you can keep your shots in the kill zone at that range.

I removed the choke tube and shot about 10 of them out of my 410/45 and the accuracy was bad.

It used to be in Wisconsin they wouldn't be legal for deer hunting.  That may have changed.  Check local game laws prior to getting busted.

I have a 45-410 with the sights.
With my 255 gr cast bullets I can get about 3 to 4 inches at 50 yards.
while this is not great it will work on deer out to that range.

This barrel would not me my first choice to take out but if it is all I had or could afford I would  but keep shots close.

as said you must hand load for the 45 colt to get what it can really do. the factory loads are for less strong handguns
