Gas Checks? Do I need 'em in .44 Magnum Trapper
« on: February 20, 2005, 05:17:30 PM »
I remember reading Elmer Keith many years ago and he said gas checks were a waste in revolvers.  I'm shooting an M-94 Trapper in .44 Mag and some of my bullets are gas checked and others are not .  I realize that for plinking loads there is no particular need for gas checks, but how about for the hotter loads?

Any insight, comments, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say try it and see. From my own perspestive, in a '96 Ruger, I had no problems using plain base bullets, or gas checks for that matter at full power. I made my selectuion based on accuracy, and a Plain Based 240 grain Kieth bullet from a Lyman mold did the job. You may have to play with your alloy to avoid ledding with the plain base. I used water dropped wheel weights myself.
