Im just starting turkey hunting this spring and don't know much about turkey. I know a lot of people use camo guns, but would it make a difference if a wood gun was used.

From what I've read/experienced it's not so much the stock as it is the barrel. Well I suppose it could be the wood too. The argument behind that was the fact that the glare of a traditional blued barrel would scare off a wise tom. But I've had a friend who's killed plenty of turkeys with his Ithaca 37, plain wood and blued barrel.

If the wood has a lacquer to it, then it could produce that glare. But I really wouldn't worry bout it. If you're buying a new gun, you might wanna go with the camoed gun just for ease of mind. Otherwise, ol' faithful will do ya just fine.

Ah yes, the age old question: "Should I go camo or au' natural"? I figured it was easier to wrap the wood stock, barrel, & receiver in camo tape so that the turkeys don't get frightened off by a flash from the gun. Right or wrong, who knows, but wrapping the gun was cheap and didn't require allot of effort.
Lets face it, if they see any movement, they'll spook!....So just be vewy, vewy, careful!!!!

I almost forgot about the camo tape. One more thing. Is a synthetic or a wood stronger?

Depends. There are different synthetic stocks out there. But in general, it seems synthetic is stronger. See if you can get a synthetic stock in Kevlar, instead of fiberglass, for that is stronger.

Hi my father in law has used his Rem 1187 12ga Premier Light Contour gun it has the fansy wood and blue barrel he has aways killed his limit with that gun i use a Rem SP10ga camo and a black Benelli Super 90 12ga and we kill about the same he has never ran a turkey off with that Rem 1187 But me i like every gun of mine to be camo or black with matte fin. my coyote rifles are matte fin. with black stocks so i dont have to camo them VM

I've got a camo "sock" that I slip over my shotgun. It doesn't leave adhesive like tape. Check out Cabela's or Bass Pro for them.

Prior to getting the camo sock, I've spooked birds when I've had to swing my shotgun to draw a bead on them. I think that's when they see some glint from the barrel.

I believe that a turkey can spot a reflection or a glare from a non camo /gloss gun. I don't doubt the fact, I could or any other experienced hunter could bag a bird with a non camo gun. But my hunting time is usually limited to Saturdays and don't like to spend a whole morning working a bird to get busted on something I could have prevented from the start. But you do learn from your mistakes.
I used camo cloth tape, not camo duct tape with great success for years. It works well on my pump gun. Try to avoid leaving it in a hot vehicle or exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time. If not, the tape residue will be become very sticky and gooey and harder to remove. Alcohol will remove the tape residue.
On autos, camo socks work well. A friend has used the same camo sock for numerous years. He cut out a place for the bolt, ejection port and trigger.
I seen another friend with Camo Clad or some kind of stick-on material and liked it. It comes pre-fit and just sticks on. I don't know much about it.

Personally, I think the camo stock craze was started by a marketing genious. If you have a wood stock that is shiny or polished bluing, you might want to put some tape on it. Glare is bad. Movement is worse. The turkey isn't going to be looking to see if your stock is camo or not. If he catches a glare or sees unusual movement, he'll be gone quick.

I've killed about 10 turkeys, about 5 Tom's and about 5 hens, and every one of them was shot with a traditional blue steel, wood stocked shotgun. I don't think it's so much the glare as it is the movement. I've had turkeys within 15 yards, deer hunting, wearing bright orange (turkeys do see color) and never spooked them, they fed back through within an hour. It's the movement, of the weapon, more than the glare.

deerslayer,I agree with all the guys here."Movement" is your foe.I use fully camo9Realtree" shotgun of course with a XXX choke.But even blued probably ok as long as you "don't move" On a brighter note;just be glad that they don't have much of a sense of smell like the whitetail.If they did we would never kill one :lol: ..............Rick

As I understand the synthetic stocks that come on the guns are really not that strong, but actually tend to be noisy and hollow sounding if you bang on them. I prefer the solid wood stocks because they're warmer and quieter too..... either plain or camo finished.
