A Hog Tale
« on: February 21, 2005, 07:12:47 AM »
Hey guys,

This past weekend my brother and I were in the woods at daylight and had "encounters" with four different groups of hogs. We jumped a gang of hogs from their beds at 9:30 a.m. that we never saw, we just heard them run off. We jumped another bedded hog at 2:30 p.m. that we never saw. At 4:00 p.m. we heard two hogs fighting and I was slowly working my way toward them and evidently one hog ran the other off. Again, I never saw either one of them. I was getting frustrated, all of this action and no hog sightings yet.

Finally, just before dark we were slowly making our way out of the hunting area and I happened to spot a hog. The hog turned into two hogs and finally another one appeared. I slowly made my way through some brush to where the hogs were feeding. By the time I got to where I could see the area where the hogs had been feeding they were gone. I waited for a minute and a hog appeared in some brush about 75-80 yards away. Finally it stepped forward and turned broadside and presented me with a head/neck shot. Since we had already missed out on three other opportunities, I opted to take the shot. I hit the hog just behind and below the ear and it dropped in its tracks.

We could not see the other two hogs, but we could hear them feeding. To our amazement they did not leave after the shot. My brother had come along for the hiking trip and did not even have a gun. I reloaded my Encore and he put the sneak on the area where the other two hogs were feeding. He got within ten yards of one of the hogs before he could see it due to a large tree that had fallen. He shot the hog in the heart at ten steps. It made an easy blood trail to follow!

We skinned and deboned the hogs and carried them out in our packs. It was 1:00 a.m. the following morning before we made it back home. Talk about tired! It was a memorable hunting experience though!

The first photo is a picture of me and my hog.  The second photo is my brother and his hog.

I hope that you enjoyed the photos and tale!

Congradulations! That sounds like a great day- a long day, but a great one! Keep the stories coming. By the way, is that a custom camo job on your encore? Nice. :D

It is indeed!  The guys at Duracoatinc. put a Realtree Hardwoods finish on everything including stock, frame, forend, scope base, scope mounts, barrel, and scope.  They did a great job.

Here is their web site if anyone is interested....

loaded4bear:

I'm hunting in the North Ga Mountains.  We have several WMA's up here with wild pig populations.  The terrain is rugged and steep but the scenery is spectacular!  It's a lot of fun.
