I just picked up an N-Frame 4" 44 special revolver, and want a nice shooting load for it - preferably a 250-260 gr LSWC and using 2400 powder. I don't want to hot rod it to 1200 fps like the old Keith load, using 17.0 gr of 2400. Any preferred loads out there?

Don't use Keith's original data of 22 grains of 2400. The powder has changed since then. I think his lead was also softer and his bullets lighter at 240 grains.

8-9 grs. of Unique makes for a good 44 Spl. load under a 240 gr. Lyman 429421 which is a Keith type SWC. Friends of mine have sworn off Unique since the introduction of the Clays line of powders. All of them tell me the Clays burns cleaner. I've got so much Unique I haven't tried any yet but it would bear looking into.

For 2400 Lyman gives 13.2 grs. as a max under a 245 gr. LSWC and RCBS shows 11.9 grs. as a max of 2400 under essentially the same bullet, ( this from their cast bullet manuals ). Velocities are a little over 800 fps. as listed.

You mention LSWC. I hope you don't intend to drive a swaged LSWC at 1000 fps. If you do you're gonna lead that bore and quick.

2400 has changed. 22 gr was for the 44 Magnum not 44 Special. I just loaded some this weekend with "new" 2400.
14.5 gr 2400 250 gr Lyman #429421 gives 990-1000 fps out of my 6 1/2 " Model 624.

Groups are much better with CCI 350 primers instead of WW large pistol primers.

Thanks for the info. I load 19.0 gr of new 2400 in my 44 mag Redhawk, and it's plenty for that pistol. I will try working up to the 14.5 gr load, using my chrono. I don't want a hotrod, just a nice shooting load that won't take the gun apart.

The bullets are Leadhead 255 gr SWC, plain base. I haven't had leading troubles with the 44 mag load. They aren't swaged.......
