« on: February 21, 2005, 08:15:36 AM »
Looking to buy a factory pistol barrel for my encore for deer and pig hunting. Which one would you suggest a 30-06 or a 45-70?

 Just looking for comments, suggestions

I would pick 7mm-08, but that wasn't one of your choices.  Of them I would pick 30-06.

But my opinion is worthless because I don't have an Encore and have never shot either of the above rounds in a pistol.

Thanks for the reply. I have been checking the past threads and the 7-08 is sounding better.

the 45-70 will really slam the ham(couldn't resist) the 30-06 will work about 100 yards farther out. Both of these rounds deliver almost twice the recoil of the 7-08.Depending on where you hunt the pigs may not need the bigger calibers to get the job done.200# feral pigs are no problem for an 18" 7-08 with 145 grain Speer bullets!

We were being polite.  If someone lays their hand on the ground, you walk around it, rather than on it, if you can.  I have a '06 rifle, hoping to get a rolling block in 45-70.  Would not choose either caliber in a Thompson handgun for anything.  Too many better, more "exotic" calibers to choose from.

Just an honest opinion because you asked.

Good luck with your choice.

Either will go the job, if you want a little longer range go for the 30-06. If you want to thump them up close out to 100 yards the 45-70 will do that with not problem either. Bottom line is you have to be happy with your decision. Good luck and let us know what you decide.  :D

This isn't live chat. Just because you don't have a response in the first three hours doesn't mean folks are not going to respond. They will get around to it when they can. Have a little patience.

45/70 vs 30.06

I have a Contender in 45/70, 16” barrel w/muzzle brake. Using 325 gr cast bullets, H-322, 2X optics, and a good day I can stay within 3” at 100yds (I believe that the GUN could do better!)…certainly good enough for a pig out to that range. A consideration not previously mentioned is the State you will hunt in; I have heard that some will only allow straight wall cases. As for that 30.06, I shoot a lot of 45/70 rounds but would still be apprehensive about touching off the 30.06 in a pistol. ‘Course if you’ve shot any JDJ calibers……

Although I do not have a 45-70 Encore pistol barrel, I do have a couple of 30/06 pistol barrels and I feel that you will find the 30/06 more versatile than the 45-70.  You can load the 30/06 down a little lighter with lighter weight bullets for practice and other targets.  The 45-70 will require a bit more lead just because of the bore diameter.  Also there is the issue of trajectory drop where the 30/06 will outperform at the longer ranges.

With either of these I would suggest the new T/C rubber grip and forearm sets.  They take a bit of the vibration out the the heavy 30/06 loadings and I would think the same for the heavy 45-70 ones also.
