Author Topic: 870 Express - 28" or 26" ? (Read 722 times)

Been looking to get one of these for a while and have found a brand new 28" synthetic stocked Express for $249. I really would rather have the 26" barreled one but they run about $25 more. The one I've been looking at is a 2004 model. Should I go ahead and get the 28" model? What advantage / disadvantage is there over the 26" models?

virtually no difference... in some guns the 28" balances better and the shorter gun shoots faster... unless you're a serious shooter you'll never notice the difference... i'm relatively short (5'9") and have always felt that 26" was a better fit for me, but a couple of years ago I bought a 28" model 12 that instantly became my favorite gun...

I bought the 26" barrelled 870 because I thought the 28" was a little unwieldily. It may be because I'm pretty short. I used to use a 20ga 1100 for grouse hunting with what I think is a 28" barrel. It could be a real pain while charging through the thick stuff. The longer barrel does swing a little nicer, but for the type of hunting I do, the extra maneuverability of the 26 incher is the way to go.

For all-around use and to retain best resale value, Dali Llama recommend 28" barrel. :-)

Dali Llama: Not trying to be rude or be an a**hole...But why do you always do the "Dali Llama say" or "Dali Llama think" thing. Just wondering :? . Is there a storie behind it or have you always just did it like that?

I think it depends what you are going to use it for. I tend to prefer shorter barrels because I do a lot of shooting from confined spaces at targets going straight away. If you pass shoot at doves or waterfowl the longer barrel is probably a bit better.
