Spartan Double Rifles
« on: February 22, 2005, 01:06:50 PM »
I posted this a while ago on the Remington forum, but nobody had one yet, So I'll ask here...
Remington is marketing these Russian made doubles in .30-06 and .45-70. Anyone try one yet? I find it hard to believe the barrels are regulated at the price they are asking. Usually takes about 10 times the money to get them both shooting to the same spot.

Aren't they to be regulated by the use of a screw & key at the forend that "warps" the barrels for the load you are working with? I've been looking out for them, too, but haven't seen any yet. 8)

Got one on order, or should I say I am in line in the backorder.  My dealer says they are not here yet and as per Remington they will not be here till late spring.

It is my understanding that you sight in one barrel and then use a screw jack arrangement to "regulate" or put the other one at the same point of impact.

I am being told it is gonna cost me under $600.00 when it gets here and at that price I'm willing to take a gamble.  I have always had a fondness for 45-70's and had a variety over the years from Trapdoors to Rolling blocks to NEF's to bolt actions.. Always wanted but yet to own a double and at this price I am not going to miss the opportunity

I don't expect to see it for a few months yet, but when I do I will post some notes here on how it shoots, fit and finish, etc..

Are these things gonna be O/U or SxS? I guess I was assuming SxS but the posts here make me think O/U. I'd be tempted by a .45-70 SxS but not by an O/U. I had a muzzle loader like that ONCE and never again.

Remington shows both O/U and SxS on the website, with the O/U also listed as combination  rifle/shotguns. I'm only asking about the SxS rifles.

I believe that includes the Buffalo Bore .45-70 loads. Believe me that's as much as I want to shoot. I think I could see me with one in .45-70 if the actual selling price is right. But I want to see and hold one before plunking down the money.

I think I might need one but I have to hold it first like GB.
With this rifle only tipping the scale at 7.5lbs. the 28k might be more than most want to touch off.

Swage,

Will keep ya up to date but don't expect anything soon as they ain't comin in for a few months and I am on a waiting list.  I can give you my dealers name if you want to talk to them.

GB and Others, it is a SXS and I load most of my 45/70 stuff.  I am not into whips & chains or other sorts of self abuse and don't plan to hunt water buffalo or elephants with a 7.5 pound gun.  I pretty much shoot loads compatible to those used in Trapdoors with my favorite, to date, being 28 gr. of AA5744 and 405 gr cast RNFP bullet.  Shoot this in my converted siamese mauser and will try in the double when it arrives.

I would assume that if one wanted to shoot jacketed softpoint factory ammo that the standard Remington would be just fine as it is, or us to be, loaded on the light side as they were afraid someone would stick one of their factory rounds in a trapdoor.

I have alway wanted a double (SXS) rifle and I have a soft spot for 45/70's (have had many different ones but never a SXS).  In any case even holding pressures low (below 28,000) it will still make a dandy deer or blackbear gun, I rarely run across water buffalo or elephants here in Minnesota anymore.   Guess they were hunted out here:)

Anyway more to follow but don't expect a squel anytime too soon.

Later folks :D

I don't understand why anyone would wait until the field reports come in on this SxS. The maker has a fine reputation in that  all of their past and current products, while spartan ( it wasn't for nothing that this name was chosen!), you got the most for your $$. The next least expensive double 45/70 is the (cartridge) Kodiak at 5 times the money. There is 'no' 3rd least expensive one: after the kodiak you are talking about mortgaging your house for any SxS rifle. Personally I don't believe Remington will ever be able to  fill the orders for this item. 8)

Why would they make one with such a pressure limit?

It might have something to do with the barrel wall thickness. The .30-06 is not limited to these pressures. The chamber walls would be much thinner in the .45-70 if both calibers use the same frame.
Oh, and by the looks of the stock this thing might sting a bit.

RaySendero, I doubt it would blow up, this thing ain't exactly a trapdoor Springfield. But 28,000 PSI is the SAAMI limit for the .45-70, so that lets Remington off the hook warranty-wise and liability-wise. It is a sad fact of modern day life, you have to idiot-proof or lawyer-proof every new product.

Happened to talk to my gunsmith today a he has two on order from the S.H.O.T, show and noone had spoken for the 45-70 so it's mine  when it arrives. I can hardly wait. With the Quickload software I'll try to load for power and still stay under 30,00 cup. I'll learn how to post pics before it arrives
