A friend won a weatherby/howa 300 wsm in a gun raffle. after picking it up, we mounted the scope in weaver 2 pc bases and millett rings. went to bore site it and ended up looking off the graph at 3 oclock, twice the width of the graph. cranked the millett rings to where it read zero and went to the range. missed a 4'x4' target at 25 yds. re-bore sited it by looking thru the barrel and scope, cranked the millett rings back to where they started and shot again. 2" 100 yd group, using winchester 180 gr factory pp ammo. re-installed the bore site and was still looking way over at 3 oclock. installed a second scope, both scopes were new in box, in new rings--on same bases and still the same. never had this happen to me before in my 20 plus years of mounting scopes. any ideas as to why? barrel not true? crown bad? let me know. thanks--jim

Try new bases and rings from another manufacturer.

It's most likely either threaded crooked or drilled crooked. I usually set them up in the mill and recut the screws to #8-40. Most of the time that cleans up the misaligned holes. You can also use a Leupold windage adjustable base if you don't want to modify the rifle. Just set the scope in the middle of its travel, and install the rings using a collimator.

mobade, I thought about the base holes being out of alignment. thats why we used the millett wind adj. rings. as I said, we also tried another set of new rings and another new scope. my question is: even if the bases are out of alignment, after we zeroed the gun on paper, we re-installed the collameter and it was still off the graph at 3 oclock. at that point the barrel was pointing/shooting where the scope was looking, so why is the collameter so far off? and no, the collameter is not damaged. thanks--jim

Are you certain the collimator didn't go south. The scale may have shifted. Try the rifle(after zeroing on Paper) with a different collimator. I have seen them go bad.. If the scope and the rifle agree and the collimator doesn't then the collimator must be wrong. With the rifle zeroed at 100 yards where does the group land at differing yardages. If theres a problem with the rifle the groups should crossfire badly.. Shooting to one side or the other of the crosshairs at sny distance other than the one used to zero them..

Another good test is to take a rifle you know is zeroed, and put the collimator on it and see where it's pointing. When we were doing our collimator tests that's the way we did it - take a couple or rifles to the range, get good zeros, and try every collimator on them. These were brand new collimators, and some weren't even close. The Sweany was the only one that was dead nuts on all the rifles, so it's the one that gets used. The rest have been returned or sold.

I have a Remington with the receiver threaded at an angle so that the straight barrel shoots 18 MOA to the left. Bought Burris Signature rings and the offset inserts.
