High School Students Call for Radio Stations, Schools to Play Anti-Gun Violence Song

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the latest
figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 2,867 children - an average of eight each day - were killed by gunfire in 2002.  Now teens are standing up and saying enough is enough: students from Suncoast Community High School in Riviera Beach, Fla. have formed a group called Alter8tion (http://www.alter8tion.com) and recorded "Stop the Violence" an album speaking out against gun violence.  And they're challenging radio stations and schools across the country to unite against gun violence by playing the album's first track, "Touch Your Mind," at noon on March 15, 2005.

Written by the students and produced by Suncoast Community High School teacher Aldric Marshall, "Stop the Violence" pulls no punches.

These are kids who have seen the effects of gun violence firsthand, who have lost friends or family members or neighbors to gunfire.  Their pain and frustration are evident in the album's raw lyrics.  But "Stop the Violence" is also a testament to the students' strength - and their hope that their country will finally hear their voices.

"How many times have we heard the figures on gun deaths among children and teenagers, with little to no change in response to their cry for help?" asked Marshall.  "Kids are left wondering if anyone really cares. These are the voices of our future and, until now, no one has been listening. Alter8tion's goal is to finally make schools, communities and politicians hear their message."

To that end, the group is sending "Stop the Violence" to radio stations
and schools with a simple request: Just play it.  In addition to getting "Touch Your Mind" played over airwaves and school PA systems on March 15, the group hopes to persuade radio stations to play the song at least once a day in a show of solidarity against gun deaths.

"These students are echoing President George W. Bush's message in a different way," explained Marshall. "They too want No Child Left Behind, in the schools and in the streets.  They've experienced life on the five o'clock news up-close and personal, and they know the statistics.  One child every three hours, eight children every day, 55 children every week die from gun violence. We can no longer let their cry for peace fall on deaf ears."

For a copy of Alter8tion's "Stop the Violence," or to learn more about the group, contact Aldric Marshall at 561-502-4921 or klove144@worldnet.att.net.

The single "Touch Your Mind" is available for download at the group's Web site, http://www.alter8tion.com.

*Note:  While it is regrettable that some young people suffer becuse of this societal phenomena, it is grass roots movements like this perpetrated by anti-gun forces that poison the minds of our youth against their heritage and the truth behind the purpose of the 2nd Amendment.  Rather than waitng until their teen years and using popular music to teach these kids Guns=Violence=Bad, why not teach them during their formative years about things like Truth, Honor, Personal Responsibility, and Gun Safety?
They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

I'm not sure I get it.  I haven't heard the music, but the words in the article don't mention anything about gun control, only gun violence.  I guess all of us would support reducing the use of violence perpetrated using guns, wouldn't we?  Doesn't the NRA support very tough penalties for people who use guns to commit any crimes, particularly violent crimes?

Maybe I'm missing something here, so clue me in if I am.

I am an NRA member, a hunter, fire arms owner who value my second amendment right.  I'm with you on that, but I just don't see the problem with the music has been revealed in the article.

I would also be interested in confirming those figures on gun deaths.  That seems like a lot.  I wonder how many are suicides?

It's the old "evil gun" theory being re-told.  As if a gun, by merely being present, will cause bad things to happen to good people.

The idea that guns, as inanimate objects, are somehow responsible for violence rather than the thinking, reasoning, people using them is a bit fantastical don't you think?

In this case, it's an old song being taught to a new generation.

Alsation.
You are correct, the gun control pukes call anyone under 25 a child so they call pick up all the drug dealer shootings. The actual number of shootings has gone down every year for the last 20 years in the real children catigory of 0 to 17. The anti's count  suicides, Police shootings of gang bangers, Domestic violence(a lot of married people 18 to 25) self defence, etc. Yeah they "cook" the books. If you don't lie & cheat you can't be a liberal, it's the rules!
