What are you?

When it comes to offshore fishing are you a topwater or bottom fisherman?  It seems that people classify you as either one of these types of fisherman.  I like both, but I would say that I am a bottom fisherman.

What about you?

Well, I'd say for close offshore (meaning around the harbor and such) I'm kind of near or on the bottom.  But sometimes, there are alot of fish moving around during certain periods.  I've had a couple of times while close to shore (mile or two out) where I couldn't get the bait where I wanted to before a mackeral would snatch it up.

As for way out there going for sharks (around 20 miles or so offshore) I like to have my bait about 60ft or so in really deep waters with a good chum line going.  One good rule of thumb, is going with a few fishers in the boat; that way there are a couple lines skimming around 15-20ft, and another going deeper in case the sharks come in low and slow.  I've only went out shark hunting about 5 or 6 times, but we were able to get some action in on most of those trips.  Most of the time, we tried to go for makos, which are very good eating I must say.  Either way when out in the ocean, even if you don't catch something, it sure is a very good time getting one's fill of the difference in God's creation out there.  A whole different world out there apart from good old "Terra Firma" IMO.

Zachary, I have downrigers on the boat and do some trolling, but if the Kings or Silvers are not running strong I lose patience real fast. I guess my real love in salt water fishing would be bottom jigging. We have over 200 species of rock fish (look like bass) several species of cod, of course halibut is always a favorite.

We also crab, shrimp, clam. Actually a guy could live very well on a remote southeast alaska beach.  Regards, Byron

Yea, that's the thing about the Macks - once you throw something in the water, good luck trying to reach the bottom.
