barrel cleaning on 91/30

i just picked up my mosin nagant 91/30 yesterday.  got it from sog, it has century arms international markings on it (cai).  it was about what i expected although the bore looked a little dark.  i scrubbed the barrel with a bronze brush using both regular solvent and then switched to the ammonia based copper solvent.  never could seem to get it clean.  every time i would get clean patches out of it and then go back to the brush, i'd get more (a lot) black "stuff" out of the barrel.  even tried a few passes with a stainless brush to no avail.  going to try it this saturday and see if the jacketed bullets slick up the barrel any.    anybody got any ideas on how to get this thing clean or should i even try.  don't want to scrub the rifling out of it!

I use G.I.Rifle Bore Cleaner and what i do is to use a wornout brush or a smaller brush and i wrap a wet patch around the brush and pull it thru the bore from the chamber to the end of the barrel.  The brush puts pressure on the wet patch and it scrubs the bore.  After a few times it should come out a lot cleaner.  Then I run two dry patches thru it and if there clean  then I run one patch with oil.                                    BigBill

   I used Otters foam bore cleaner in my 91/30, fill the barrel with the foam then let it set for about 30 min. with the end of the barrel pluged with a patch or cork, then use a brass brush.  may take a couple of times but did the job for me

Go to the range and shoot 20 rounds as fast as you can.This will get it good and hot.Then clean it there.You'll be surprised what you can get out of a hot barrel.

I would recommend getting some Flitz or J-B Bore Cleaning Compound and Kroil penetrating oil (Brownells 800-741-0015) and start using tight patches loaded up with the compound.  It should come back out after a good back and forth scrubbing looking very dark and loaded with carbon and gilding metal!  Then after usuing a few of these patches follow up with your usual bore cleaner.  You will see an amazing difference!

I have a Swede carbine I just never could get clean till I used the J-B compound/Kroil treatment....this is even after using an electronic bore cleaner.

Make an electric bore cleaner! It will really remove the copper fast but you still need to do some cleaning rod work. I use it on all my mil-surps and used guns.
 I just used a steel rod from Home depot, corks or rubber test tube stoppers (with a small hole to insert the rod into) to plug the chamber, a small piece of shrink wrap tubing to insulate the muzzle, a couple of batteries, some wire and household ammonia. Here is a site with instructions:

I use Sweet's 7.62 Solvent for most of my copper removal.  In some extreme cases I some times use the JB Bore Paste followed by the Sweet's treatment.

Something to remember with copper cleaners - using a Brass or Bronze brush, or even a Brass jag, may well give you a false positive for copper by leaving some blue or green on the patch.  I now use either steel or plastic tips and nylon brushes.

Could you repost the instructions for the homemade electronic bore cleaner. I have my own instructions but liked the addition of the diagrams that I saw on yours. I cannot use the link above as it dead-ends me.
